Editorial Review

ABOUT MCLAREN BAY PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATES

McLaren Health Care operates 12 hospitals, including McLaren Bay Region, which sits on the southwestern outskirts of Bay City, Mich., 47 miles north of Flint. A service of the hospital, McLaren Bay Psychiatric Associates (MBPA) provides outpatient-based treatment and case management services for adults. The facility is also one of the 109 (22.8 percent) treatment centers in the state with programming for adolescents.

Services are for individuals struggling with primary mental health disorders along with co-occurring substance abuse disorders, which is an option at only 46.6 percent of treatment centers in the state. Individuals who require stabilization may be referred to the 23-bed Behavioral Health Center of McLaren Bay Region.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission into the program, clients undergo an initial psychiatric evaluation to determine the client’s primary disorder, as well as their physical and medical status. If necessary, the facility may also administer a substance abuse assessment. The initial evaluations also help clinicians to form a individualized approach to care and ensure outpatient-based treatment is an appropriate level of care. In some instances, the outpatient program serves as a “step-down” aftercare service after inpatient treatment.

Inpatient treatment through the McLaren Bay Region's Behavioral Health Center is intended as a short-term measure only, with the intention of helping a client to return to their normal life in a safe and quick manner. The program offers individual and group therapy as well as case management services. Family involvement and “self-help” are also encouraged.

According to the facility’s website, MBPA provides a “recovery oriented, strengths focused treatment” utilizing a range of evidence-based treatment approaches. During outpatient treatment, clients may participate in individual counseling, group therapy, and family counseling to help clients improve self-awareness, regulate emotion, and learn coping strategies. Specialized group sessions and psychoeducational classes on specific mental health conditions or substance abuse may also be available.

Along with counseling and educational sessions, clients may also receive ongoing medication management. To help ensure clients receive appropriate support, MBPA also provides a range of case management services, which may include locating health services, supportive housing, employment, education, social services and other community-based resources.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Staff members of McLaren Bay Region and McLaren Bay Psychiatric Associates’ clinical team includes board-certified psychiatrists and physician’s assistants. In Michigan, 97.1 percent of all substance abuse treatment centers have continuing education requirements for staff. Three Rehabs.com survey respondents awarded two five-star and one three-star ratings for the staff's level of training and experience to date.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The behavioral health department has 23 beds, offering a bit more availability than the average number of individuals in a residential facility at a given time, which was 18 clients as of 2016.

The three individuals polled on McLaren Bay Psychiatric Associates's accommodations and amenities had mixed perspectives. While one gave four and five stars for the facility’s accommodations and its level of cleanliness, respectively, the other two reviewers gave ratings of only one or two stars for these categories.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date provided mixed opinions of the facility. Although alum T.W.L. felt the facility excelled in their “tough” approach, they provided ratings of one out of five stars for the facility’s level of family participation, its holistic offerings, and its counseling options. However, T.W.L. did provide more moderate three-star ratings for the center's effectiveness in addressing co-occurring disorders.

The other alum praised most areas of the facility, offering a five-star rating for the treatment staff’s level of experience and training. “Very understanding staff!” the alum wrote. The survey respondent also offered five-star ratings for the facility’s ability to treat co-occurring disorders and its discharge planning. “A follow-up/follow-thru plan is also a key to success…” they added. However, the alum did cite overcrowding as an issue.

On Google reviews, MBPA received a below-average rating of 1.8 out of five stars from six reviewers to date.[1] One reported a difficult time scheduling an appointment, and another was frustrated with long wait-times, which they linked to the facility being overcrowded; still another attributed their grandfather’s early onset Alzheimer’s to the facility’s medicine mismanagement.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Rebuking this negative feedback, the single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date was very positive. The reviewer gave the facility four or five out of five stars in over a dozen evaluated treatment metrics, such as the treatment for co-occurring disorders, family programming, and overall treatment effectiveness. “The staff show compassion and really want to help,” the anonymous reviewer wrote.

WHAT STAFF SAY

At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com had not yet received feedback from current and former employees. On Indeed, 62 staffers gave the facility a 3.6-star average rating.[2] Several individuals agreed that the facility's largest problem was that it was understaffed. Still, many felt that dedication to clients and its quality of care were facility strengths. One representative respondent wrote: "They are really good at everything they do they don't let people down or anything like that they have a positive attitude."

FINANCING

Per the facility’s webpage, private insurance is accepted, along with Medicare (accepted at 60.1 percent of treatment centers in the state), and Medicaid (accepted at 72.2 percent of Michigan facilities). Financial assistance is available for qualifying clients. The three individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave a one-star rating and two four-star ratings for the facility's affordability.

[1] GoogleReviews

[2] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Mclaren-Bay-Region/reviews?fcountry=US&floc=Bay+City%2C+MI
