ABOUT THE SALVATION ARMY BALTIMORE'S ADULT REHABILITATION PROGRAM

Founded in 1865, the Salvation Army is now one of the world's most famous Christian evangelical organizations, with more than ten thousand community programs, hostels, shelters, and other facilities around the world. It is also one of Baltimore’s 138 private, non-profit treatment organizations. Along with disaster relief, shelter, and family services, the Baltimore center offers long-term, faith-based residential treatment for men seeking treatment for addiction. Detox is not available.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The Salvation Army Baltimore's Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) provides a 6 to 12 month faith-based residential program. It is one of 59 long-term treatment programs in the state. Other branches of the program are offered at 252 facilities across the country.

The treatment process combines spiritual, physical, and social components. The spiritual component is provided through faith-based activities such as Bible study and religious practices. The facility and its program are heavily influenced by Christian religious beliefs and practices, although people of any religion can participate.

The social component comes from residential care that uses a social model, in which residents play an active role in healing one another through a therapeutic community. This process includes mentoring in the later stages of the program once clients have completed the initial steps. In Baltimore, 54.3 percent of facilities include mentoring in their treatment programs. This model also helps residents to acquire social skills and build a sober network, which can provide long-term sobriety support.

In addition to the support of the community, residents receive traditional substance abuse treatment methods including individual and group counseling. Education is also an important component of treatment, and clients participate in anger management classes and relapse prevention training. Residents are also expected to attend AA and NA meetings as a part of their addiction treatment.

The final component is physical, where clients work in Salvation Army thrift stores.

Through these foundations, as well as a growing relationship with Jesus, the program hopes to help clients to build an orderly and fulfilling way of life. Only 37.5 percent of facilities in Baltimore offer employment training, and clients can learn job skills working in the thrift stores.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The area commanders of the Salvation Army in Central Maryland are long-time majors in the Salvation Army, one of whom was helped by the Salvation Army's services as a child. The treatment program includes counselors and mentors who are in recovery themselves. Stores are overseen by a team of administrative and management specialists. Volunteers may also be available to help with treatment programs and store operations.
