Editorial Review

ABOUT JR HEALTHCARE

Located in the greater Baltimore-metropolitan area, JR Healthcare is a community-based treatment provider that offers outpatient-based treatment for adults struggling with chemical dependency or a co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorder. It is one of 194 (about 50 percent) of treatment facilities in the state of Maryland able to accommodate individuals with co-occurring disorders. Part of Baltimore Behavioral Health JR Healthcare also offers ambulatory (outpatient) detoxification services for opioid addiction, a 23-hour stabilization unit, as well as supportive living facilities for clients who require stable housing.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Clients undergo an initial substance abuse assessment and psychiatric evaluation to determine the best course of treatment. In some cases, clients may enter an outpatient program through the organization’s 23-hour stabilization unit. Along with MAT, the facility offers evidence-based treatment programming, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help clients modify behavior. JR Healthcare utilizes medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to facilitate detoxification. MAT regimens, such as Suboxone, help to minimize the discomfort of withdrawal associated with opioid dependency. The use of Suboxone, in the state of Maryland, is relatively rare, as only 37 percent of facilities in the state use the drug to assist with detoxification services.

During treatment, individuals also learn effective coping skills to modify these thinking patterns and behaviors to help sustain long-term sobriety. In addition, Rehabs.com survey results indicated that the 12-step model of recovery may also be incorporated into programming. Through participation in group and individual counseling sessions, clients also identify destructive thinking patterns that may be contributing to their addictive behaviors.

To individualize treatment, JR Healthcare provides a range of specialized group sessions. While JR Healthcare offers 23 weekly sessions focused on chemical dependency, the facility also offers 37 weekly sessions on a range of mental health disorders and social issues. These sessions include groups focused on anxiety and stress management, bipolar disorder, depression, grief and loss, gender-specific issues, relationships, and improving self-awareness. Ongoing medication management is also available to individuals struggling with co-occurring mental health disorders. Clinicians also provide comprehensive discharge plans for program graduates.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Accredited by the Joint Commission, JR Healthcare employs a multidisciplinary team comprised of psychiatrists, licensed professional counselors, registered nurses, certified social workers, and behavioral health technicians.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings. And its supportive housing services are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. If a client transitioned into the organization’s supportive housing, clients learn basic life skills, receive educational and technical skills training, and participate in engagement activities. Clients residing in supportive housing must continue to actively engage in JR Healthcare treatment programs. Along with treatment, JR Healthcare offers several humanitarian services for clients with a dual diagnosis. These services include assistance with supportive housing, transportation, and food.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two alumni who submitted surveys to Rehabs.com gave mixed reviews. Submitting a perfect rating of five out of five stars for the facility’s counseling options and its ability to treat co-occurring disorders, one alum cited treatment as a facility strength. However, he had a negative opinion about the level of family participation offered.

Jennifer, the other alum surveyed at the time of this writing, was more critical. She submitted a moderate three-star rating for the facility’s counseling options, and gave a rating of just one star for the facility’s ability to treat co-occurring disorders. “Drug education was good.

Overall, the pair felt the staff was adequate.

WHAT STAFF SAY

The sole employee polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing felt the facility could improve in across all metrics. The staff member gave a low rating of two out of five stars for the staff’s level of experience and training, indicating that they did had care concerns.

FINANCING

JR Healthcare accepts several insurance plans, including United Healthcare, MedStar, Amerigroup, Riverside, and Priority Partners. Like 299 (about 74 percent) of other facilities in Maryland, JR Healthcare accepts Medicaid.
