Services & Treatment

Editorial Review

ABOUT GAUDENZIA - BALTIMORE

Gaudenzia Addiction Treatment & Recovery is a large, nonprofit network of substance abuse treatment facilities serving clients in the Mid-Atlantic region. Various services provided at six facilities in or near Baltimore include detox, short-term and long-term residential programs, intensive outpatient programs (IOP), partial hospitalization programs (PHP), and DWI interventions. There are specialized programs for clients struggling with co-occurring mental health and addiction disorders, and for women who are pregnant or recent mothers living with their children. Programs for adolescents and transitional housing are also available.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment at Gaudenzia Addiction Treatment & Recovery begins with an interview with admissions counselors. These counselors help clients identify their specific needs, insurance coverage (if applicable), and coordinate the admissions process. Clients begin the process by applying online or calling, and an admissions counselor will help each client enroll in appropriate treatment options.

Residential treatment adheres to a therapeutic community model of recovery, which emphasizes the rehabilitation of social, familial, work-oriented, and psychological components through personal responsibility and community support.

Gaudenzia has specialized programs for women focusing on providing treatment for them and stable environments for their children. Pregnant women can also get treatment focusing on preparing them to be mothers while addressing their addiction and behavioral health concerns.

Treatment is also available for adolescents in the residential and outpatient programs. Adolescents are housed and treated separately while focusing on the specific needs of a younger client age group. The treatment method follows the residential and outpatient models, but is tailored to the age group.

Clients are encouraged to establish support networks in their communities through program involvement and family network reconciliation. Transitional housing is available for clients with a demonstrated need for further structured and affordable living arrangements while completing the transition back into the community.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The staff at Gaudenzia consists of an executive team with extensive experience developing rehab facilities and services, licensed substance abuse counselors, counselors for co-occurring disorders, support staff, and volunteers. The staff also includes DWI and legal experts to assist clients with legal issues. The facility is CARF-accredited and the staff is licensed accordingly. An employment page on the facility’s website promotes ongoing staff education and lists several treatment staff job requirements. Certified addiction counselors must have a minimum of two years of sobriety if in recovery. Frequent hires also include certified nursing assistants and registered nurses.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Gaudenzia’s website provides limited information concerning living arrangements or related offerings at Baltimore-area facilities. Transitional housing is available at affordable rates, and is drug-free. Rehabs.com survey data revealed some common concerns. Alumni reviews included several complaints of bugs. Six individuals polled provided an average rating of 2.2 out of five for overall accommodations and 2.8 for facility cleanliness and maintenance.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, the feedback from four alumni of the Baltimore programs was mixed. Asked to rate the effectiveness of treatment on a scale of one to five, responses included ratings of two, three, and five.

Of four former clients surveyed by Rehabs.com, one provided very high ratings to nearly all of 15 metrics measured, including counseling options and the level of staff experience, and two provided all low ratings of two out of five stars. In a particularly negative review, alum J.K. described limited access to a counselor.

On Google, Gaudenzia earned an average of four out of five stars from eight reviews. [1] Many of the alumni praised the experienced staff and the program’s effectiveness. In a representative review, alum Raymond wrote: “I really have found a way to stay abstinent from drugs and alcohol. Some of the counselors here have a wealth of experience on both sides of the playing field, proving that recovery is definitely possible when we are willing, and willing to change behaviors and negative thought patterns that keep us bound.”

On its unofficial Facebook page, the facility received three five-out-of-five star reviews and one one-out-of-five star review. [2] Positive reviews claimed that the facility “saved” their lives, while alum Angela wrote: “Not sure how they even call themselves a rehab…”

On YellowPages.com, the facility had two negative and one positive review. [3] Two of the reviewers commented on unclean facilities and bug problems. For instance, alum Roberta wrote: “there is still a bedbug, roach and rodent problem. there is mold and mildew growing in the showers due to lack of cleaning products and the place is still being run like a jail.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The three reviews written by loved ones of former clients to date were generally negative.

Much of the criticism was about the staff. One relative surveyed by Rehabs.com would not recommend the program and described staff members as unprofessional. Another family member complained of unresponsive staff in a Facebook review. [2]

WHAT STAFF SAY

At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com received a single staff survey response, which characterized the facility as “chaotic” and “understaffed.”

The staff member gave the facility one out of five stars for its treatment effectiveness, holistic offerings, family participation, and counseling options. However, the staff member did give the facility three out of five stars for affordability.

On Indeed, Gaudenzia, Inc received an average rating of 3.2 out of five stars from 43 reviews. [4] While some former employees praised the management, others claimed high turnover rates for managers. However, employees frequently mentioned excellent staff training, unsanitary conditions, and low pay. In a representative review, a current employee wrote: “Very low-paying to its employees, Stressful environment, believe in a therapeutic community and behavioral modification. This is a good place to start because you learn a lot. I work well with management that is my directors.”

FINANCING

Gaudenzia’s website references donations and government grants and contracts as sources which help to cover the costs of treatment. The four individuals surveyed by Rehabs.com to date rated the affordability of treatment 3.5 out of five stars.

[1] https://goo.gl/CFXW96
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pages/Gaudenzia-at-Park-Heights/130492530417324
[3] https://www.yellowpages.com/baltimore-md/mip/gaudenzia-4450-park-heights-461032487
[4] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Gaudenzia,-Inc/reviews?fcountry=US&floc=Baltimore%2C+MD
