<p><strong>ABOUT LEAVENWORTH VA MEDICAL CENTER</strong></p> <p>The Leavenworth VA Medical Center of provides a full continuum of care options for veterans and active-duty military facing substance use (SUD) and <a href="https://www.recovery.org/pro/articles/10-things-you-need-to-know-about-dual-diagnosis-treatment/" target="_blank">co-occurring mental health disorders</a> in Leavenworth, Kan., roughly 30 minutes northwest of Kansas City. A part of the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System and <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/KS17.pdf" target="_blank">one of just six (3.2 percent of) facilities in the state that is operated by a branch of government</a>, Leavenworth VA Medical Center runs residential, intensive outpatient (IOP), and aftercare services.</p> <p>As the center does not offer psychiatric inpatient services, veterans requiring psychiatric intervention may be referred to the Topeka VA Medical Center.</p> <p><strong>TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT</strong></p> <p>All clients undergo an <strong>initial chemical dependency and/or psychiatric assessment</strong> to determine an appropriate level of care. Those struggling with chemical dependency may be recommended for <strong>highly structured long-term residential care</strong>, a program under its Domiciliary Services. Also available are specialized tracks for dual diagnoses, anxiety/depression, vocational rehabilitation, and Moral Reconation Therapy.</p> <p>Once enrolled, residents follow a curriculum of <strong>group counseling sessions and educational workshops</strong>. Programming also incorporates modalities of the specific program track chosen: clients in the substance abuse track, for instance, may delve into 12-step work and meetings, while those in the anxiety and depression track may receive ongoing medication management. <strong>Programming typically lasts 120 days</strong>, however, patients are evaluated on a monthly basis.</p> <p>Once they’ve achieved stabilization, vets may be encouraged to “step-down” to a less-intensive level of care. The VA center offers <strong>specialized intensive outpatient programs (IOP)</strong> as well as traditional outpatient-based services. IOP treatment typically lasts four weeks and involves nine hours (three sessions) of counseling and educational sessions weekly. The VA center also helps vets develop a plan of <strong>continuing care</strong> following treatment and is <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/KS17.pdf" target="_blank">one of just 92 (50.5 percent of) facilities in the state that’s <strong>dedicated to helping clients locate housing options</strong></a>.</p> <p><strong>STAFF CREDENTIALS</strong></p> <p>Leavenworth VA Medical Center employs an interdisciplinary treatment team comprised of a social worker, psychologist, psychiatrist, primary care provider, nurses, rehab technicians, and other support staff.</p> <p><strong>ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES</strong></p> <p><a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/KS17.pdf" target="_blank">One of just two (1.1 percent) hospital-based inpatient programs in the state</a>, Leavenworth VA Medical Center’s residential program <strong>can accommodate up to 150 individuals</strong> at a time. The hospital-based program offers patients 24-hour access to medical and nursing attention.</p> <p>In addition, the four alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com to date gave the VA Center in Leavenworth an average of 4.75 out of five stars for its level of cleanliness.</p> <p><strong>WHAT ALUMNI SAY</strong></p> <p>By and large, the four former patients polled by Rehabs.com to date told of an effective and cost-worthy treatment program. Of those polled on the matter, three alumni gave three, four, or five stars for the staff’s level of training and experience, while two gave four-star ratings for the family participation.
