Editorial Review

ABOUT DCCCA FIRST STEP AT LAKEVIEW

Douglas County Citizens Committee on Alcoholism (DCCCA) provides a variety of social and community services to families and individuals throughout Kansas. First Step at Lakeview, set in the south side of Lawrence, is a residential addiction treatment program for women and their children.

Intensive outpatient (IOP) programming and non-medical detox services are also available on-site. Those requiring medical detox are referred to a nearby hospital nearby.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment at First Step at Lakeview begins with an assessment to determine each woman’s needs. Women enrolled in the residential program take part in a curriculum complete with life skills training, individual and group therapy, and classes on parenting. “Health and wellness” services are also available. To address potential barriers to lasting recovery, case managers help women find employment and housing, as well as locate resources to address their and their dependent children's educational, physical, and emotional needs.

First Step also runs a nine-hour per week intensive outpatient (IOP) option. As the center believes that women should not have to leave their children to attend treatment, children may live with their mothers during treatment and attend school or DCCCA’s licensed childcare facility.

DCCCA also offers a one-day, eight-hour education class, addressing the consequences of alcohol and drug misuse, through its Alcohol and Drug Information School (ADIS).

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Staff includes case managers. One alum surveyed by Rehabs.com found the staff “caring,” yet rated staff's level of training and experience three out of five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by DCCCA regarding the women’s center, though the single alum rated the facility a perfect five stars for the facility’s accommodations, cleanliness, and meals. Clients may smoke in designated areas outside of the facility. During treatment, clients may receive calls and visits from loved ones during designated times.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

As the sole reviewer polled by Rehabs.com to date, alum S.A.L. rated First Step a perfect five stars for its affordability, family participation, and connectivity policies, among other categories. S.A.L wrote: “I personally had a great experience with this facility in all aspects of the program." Yet she also felt the facility needed to improve its screening procedures of staff “to make sure they are ready to handle all aspects of the job.”

On the facility's Facebook page, three alumni to date rated DCCCA five, one, and five out of five stars, indicating polarized reviews that lean positive.[1] Representative reviewer Megan called First Step at Lakeview a “great place to get help,” adding: “Loved it.” However, reviewer Marie rated the facility only one star, complaining that the facility prioritized strict regulations over client well-being.

WHAT STAFF SAY

On Indeed to date, six current and former employees rated DCCCA an average 4.3 out of five stars, with five positive reviews and one mixed.[2] In their commentary, one employee described DCCCA as a “productive and fun company to be apart of” while another called it a “Great agency that is growing and puts foster families first!”

FINANCING

DCCCA accepts some insurance plans, and Medicaid. For those who qualify, sliding fees based on income are also available.
