<p><strong>ABOUT YWCA WOMEN’S JOURNEY CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY</strong></p> <p>YWCA Women’s Journey in South Bend, Ind., is a <strong>women’s only chemical dependency</strong> treatment program offering residential, outpatient, and <a href="http://www.recovery.org/topics/extended-recovery-programs/" target="_blank">aftercare services</a>. The program focuses on helping women overcome addiction, as well as addressing domestic abuse, pregnancy, and parenting skills. Detox services are not available on-site, but can be arranged with a local provider.</p> <p><strong>TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT</strong></p> <p>YWCA Women’s Journey is <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/IN17.pdf" target="_blank">one of only five programs in Indiana</a> that allow children to accompany their mothers into treatment. The typical length of stay is <strong>45 to 60 days</strong>, but clients can receive up to two years of transitional housing and aftercare services.</p> <p>The treatment process begins with an <strong>initial assessment that includes the client’s mental and physical conditions</strong>, as well as the client’s treatment history and living conditions. Clients in need of assistance that qualify will be admitted to the program quickly and connected with a case manager. </p> <p>The facility prioritizes clients for admission based on several medical, legal, and need conditions. These include IV use, pregnancy, and legal custody of children. The more of these conditions a client has, the higher her priority level is. Clients at the highest priority are generally processed into the facility within 48 hours. This is <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/IN17.pdf" target="_blank">one of 57 (18.7 percent) of Indiana facilities</a> with programs specifically for pregnant women. </p> <p>Treatment occurs mostly through <strong>individual and group counseling, but case management, life skills classes, and childcare</strong> are also provided. In Indiana, there are only <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/IN17.pdf" target="_blank">11 facilities</a> that provide child care. </p> <p>The YWCA also offers the <strong>Breaking Free Dual Treatment Program</strong> for clients who are seeking treatment for both <strong>domestic violence and substance abuse</strong>. In Indiana, <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/IN17.pdf" target="_blank">147 (48.2 percent) facilities</a> provide services and support for clients involved in domestic violence. The program focuses on the connection between domestic violence and substance abuse, as well as providing simultaneous treatments for both. In this program, which lasts eight to 10 weeks, <strong>women receive parenting classes, shelter, food, and access to medical services</strong>. Their children receive education, developmental screenings, and case management.</p> <p>Aftercare planning and support services are also provided. Those who qualify can be placed in long-term transitional housing when the primary treatment program is complete. Alumni and continuing support groups are also available, and clients are encouraged to take advantage of community resources and groups.</p> <p><strong>STAFF CREDENTIALS</strong></p> <p>The YWCA Board of Directors includes university professors, attorneys, business professionals, and high ranking hospital officials. The treatment staff includes counselors, case managers, and administrative staff members that specialize in coordinating treatments. Clients also work with child care experts to learn parenting skills and fulfill legal requirements regarding custody of their children. </p> <p>The facility is one of <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/IN17.pdf" target="_blank">84 (27.5 percent) that are <strong>CARF-accredited</strong></a> and licensed by the state of Indiana. The medical and services staff likely includes licensed and credentialed counselors with specializations in women’s care and related conditions. Educators with specializations in different areas as well as childcare experts are likely also available.</p> <p><strong>ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES</strong></p> <p><strong>Transitional housing services</strong> through the YWCA provide individuals with transportation, counseling, childcare, and employment assistance while they locate permanent housing. Units are available for mothers with children and single women. Clients can stay there for up to 24 months, and rent, which includes utilities, is a percentage of each client's income.</p> <p><strong>WHAT ALUMNI SAY</strong></p> <p>At the time of this writing, one alum provided <strong>mixed feedback</strong> about their experience at YMCA Women’s Journey. The alum gave five out of five stars to the facility for its level of staff support, cleanliness, and visitor polity. For those who do not, the facility offers a sliding fee scale.
