Services & Treatment

Editorial Review

ABOUT PRESENCE — ADDICTION TREATMENT SERVICES

Sponsored by five congregations of Catholic women, Presence Health operates more than 150 healthcare facilities around Illinois, including 11 hospitals. Presence's Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, located at 1431 North Claremont Avenue in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago’s northwest side, offers a range of medical services as well as psychiatric and behavioral health treatment, including outpatient, and short-term inpatient programming for individuals struggling with substance abuse.

Presence Health also provides substance abuse services in Melrose Park, Westchester, and Evanston. These other locations offer inpatient medical detox and residential treatment, in addition to outpatient programs.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The organization bases its treatment on the 12-Steps, and prizes the peer-group interaction that 12-step meetings offer. Group counseling is offered in English and Spanish. The program also offers education, support, and aftercare planning. Families are involved in treatment throughout the process.

A more intensive level of care available is an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that meets three times per week, for three hours each time. IOP is a service offered by 65.7 percent of Illinois facilities. The center also offers general outpatient care, consisting of one or two two-hour sessions per week. Project SAFE is a state-funded IOP for families and children, which meets daily and includes parenting classes and outreach as well as clinical treatment.

Inpatient services are intended as a short-term measure only. The primary aim of inpatient treatment is to stabilize clients, using 24-hour medical supervision and prescribed medications where necessary. It is one of only 24 hospital inpatient programs in the state.

The New Vision unit is available to patients in need of medical stabilization. A new client receives a full assessment comprised of a medical history, a physical examination, a complete lab workup and a nursing evaluation. The **three day program allows the patient to safely *detox* with the aid of a full time medical staff.**

The center also offers a 10-hour risk education course for adults mandated to take a DUI course. It is part of the 53.6 percent of facilities in the state to offer a program specifically tailored to DUI/DWI education.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The center employs physicians, nurses, and counselors, all of whom are specially trained in addiction medicine and are available around the clock.

REVIEWS

Alumni feedback submitted to Rehabs.com has been mostly positive. All four of the alumni who rated the facility gave perfect five out of five star ratings for the facility's treatment effectiveness, but ratings of one, three, and five stars respectively for accommodations and amenities. “I had one of THE BEST counselors I have ever met. He doesn't back down and tells you how it is. The group meetings worked well because our group would let one another know when they thought they trouble was on the horizon,” S.A. wrote.

At the time of this writing, secondary sites yielded no coverage of the addiction treatment program in particular, and mixed reviews of the hospital in general, with average ratings of four out of five stars based on 619 reviews on Facebook (where the center may have the ability to manage its own page)[1], 2.5 out of five stars based on 91 reviews on Yelp[2], two stars based on four reviews on YellowPages.com[3], and an average of 2.9 out of five-stars based on 176 reviews on Google.[4] The negative reviews tended to cite long wait times, while positive reviewers often praised the hospital’s staff. “Doctors, nurses, and staff were helpful, kind, and attentive. There were definitely higher priority cases and crazier situations than mine. But the staff still gave us full attention and made sure I was treated thoroughly,” Andrea wrote in a representative positive review on Yelp.

FINANCING

Presence Health accepts Medicare and is in-network with numerous insurance plans, including but not limited to Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, Cigna, Humana, and United. The cost of treatment varies according to the client’s needs.

[1]https://www.facebook.com/pg/PresenceSaintsMaryandElizabeth/reviews/
[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/presence-saints-mary-and-elizabeth-medical-center-chicago
[3] http://www.yellowpages.com/chicago-il/mip/presence-saints-mary-and-elizabeth-medical-center-22457648?lid=22457648
[4] GoogleReviews
