ABOUT MERCY HOSPITAL AND MEDICAL CENTER

Located in Chicago Ill., Mercy Hospital and Medical Center provides a full continuum of programming for individuals struggling with substance abuse, psychiatric disorders, and co-occurring disorders. The hospital’s Alcohol and Drug Dependency Program (ADDP) at Chicago’s Mercy Hospital offers inpatient, outpatient, and intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment. It is one of 13 facilities in Illinois to provide hospital-based inpatient treatment.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility's website, upon admission, patients participate in an initial assessment to identify individual client needs. Patients struggling with substance abuse may be referred to the hospital’s inpatient program.

To help clients acquire and maintain long-term sobriety, Mercy facilitates a structured schedule of individual and group therapy sessions, relapse prevention groups, and recreational activities. The hospital also emphasizes outside support-system development, such as 12-step participation, as an important component to treatment.

The dual diagnosis program also incorporates ongoing psychiatric evaluations and medication management into programming. Regarding the dual diagnosis program, the facility website states: “Daily group sessions provide therapy and education, encourage participation in 12-step meetings and enhance primary treatment plans.”

Treatment for primary psychiatric disorders consists of individualized behavioral therapy, education, case management, medication management, and relapse prevention workshops. During the psychiatric partial hospitalization program (PHP), patients receive a full-day of programming, then return home each night. The hospital offers lunch vouchers, and transportation may be available to patients in PHP, making it among the 28.3 percent of Illinois facilities to provide transportation services.

Once patients are stabilized through PHP or inpatient, clinicians form an individualized aftercare plan, and patients may be referred to its intensive outpatient program (IOP). Available for both patients treated for substance abuse and primary psychiatric disorders, IOP meets four to five days a week and focuses on education, 12-step involvement, and relapse prevention.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Mercy Hospital and Medical Center's website notes the treatment team includes physicians and registered nurses, as well as certified counselors and licensed clinical social workers.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There's currently no information provided on the facility's website or otherwise regarding its living arrangements and related offerings. Of the three people polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing, two gave one out of five stars for accommodations and amenities, and one person gave four stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two former patients polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing offered split opinions of the facility, specifically its staff. While one anonymous alum gave five out of five stars for the treatment staff's level of experience and training, another alum gave the staff’s experience and training one star.

Likewise, the two former patients offered ratings of one and five stars respectively for the facility’s level of staff support. She gave two out of five stars for the facility's counseling options and its support staff.
“My mother was out of control and this place provided a controlled atmosphere where she seemed to calm down a bit because of the authority figures in place. That was the only benefit we saw,” the family member wrote. The reviewer felt that the facility over-medicated its patients and lacked proper structure.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive any reviews from this facility’s staff members. However, the 52 individuals who left reviews for the hospital as a whole on Glassdoor at the time of this writing provided an average 2.2 out of five stars. [2] “There is a reason this hospital always has openings for nurses and that's because they all leave after working here for a year or less. Management does not listen to their staff,” one representative staff reviewer wrote.

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, Mercy Hospital accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance from numerous providers.
