Editorial Review

ABOUT HARTGROVE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SYSTEM

Hartgrove Behavioral Health System provides comprehensive behavioral and mental health care services to adults, adolescents, and children. Based in a quiet residential neighborhood of Chicago, this facility offers residential, partial hospitalization (PHP), and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs for individuals struggling with mental health and co-occurring substance abuse disorders.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Residential programming is organized by age. The Children’s Program (three to 12), The Adolescent Program (13 to 17), and The Adult Program (18 and up) take evidence-based approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and trauma-informed care (TF-CBT). Residents are engaged in expressive opportunities including pet therapy, horticultural therapy, art therapy, and music/dance movement classes. Children enrolled in school attend The Hartgrove Academy’s Educational Program and those with substance abuse issues have access to a separate substance abuse track.

Designed for those who require treatment in a less restrictive setting or as a step-down from residential care, the intensive five-day PHP caters to children and adolescents ages six to 17 with depression, anxiety, ADHD/ADD, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In addition to evidence-based therapies, PHP works to identify and build upon each client’s strengths and focuses on conflict resolution, anger management, and family therapy. Upon graduating, clients are supported through discharge planning and follow-up care.

Adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 are supported through IOP, another intermediate level of care that places an emphasis on clinician-led group therapy. In combination with medication management, IOP sessions incorporate relaxation therapy, mindfulness exercises, and cognitive restructuring. IOP sessions focus on group therapy and are offered Monday through Thursday, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and teenagers also have access to yoga, dinner, and transportation services.

The TRAUMA (Trauma Recovery Assistance Utilizing Multiple System-Based Approaches) program addresses the four components of TF-CBT care: anxiety management, emotional regulation, cognitive coping skills, and self-esteem. Additionally, two more outpatient clinics are available in different areas of Chicago offering general counseling services.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Hartgrove Behavioral Health System employs a medical staff that boasts over 100 years of psychiatric, hospital experience. The highly-trained treatment team consists of physicians, registered nurses, and therapists.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

This facility offers modest, comfortable living arrangements. Multiple lounge areas feature foosball tables, board games, chairs and couches, and TVs. There are also both indoor and an outdoor basketball courts.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, the two alums who completed Rehabs.com surveys provided positive feedback. Both choosing to remain anonymous, the pair commented on the “great” staff and the effectiveness of individual and group therapies. In addition, the two alums gave ratings of four or five out of five stars for the facility’s affordability and the staff’s level of training and experience.

On Google, however, reviewers reported nightmare stories and experiences. Eighty-five reviewers’ ratings average only 2.0 out of five stars.[1] Alum Diana, for example, wrote: “They traumatized me. Made my situation ten times worse than what it originally was.” Additionally, Evelyn, amongst others, called the staff rude and unhelpful. “I would definitely not recommend it to anyone,” she added.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

To date, two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com gave negative reviews of the facility. These anonymous reviewers both complained about a psychiatrist who wasn’t equipped to treat children. Aside from reporting strong levels of family participation, one reviewer told Rehabs.com: “Everything else was bad.”

Some Google reviewers were more appreciative. Lisa, for example, told of her son who went to three other hospitals before finding Hartgrove. “All of the staff we encountered, which numbered many, were just outstanding and understanding,” she wrote.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Though Rehabs.com has yet to receive feedback from staff members, secondary review sites reveal mixed experiences from behind the scenes. Forty Indeed reviewers to date have awarded 3.1 out of five stars with many complaining about the stress and lack of growth.[2] A three-star reviewer said: “I felt like it was an over priced babysitter,” but added that “The best part was facilitating groups in the day room.” Another reviewer, who gave a perfect five-star rating, said: “The most enjoyable part of the job, was that when I went home for the day. I know I had made a difference in my patients life.”

Additional ratings appear on Glassdoor where the facility has earned 2.6 out of five stars to date from 28 reviewers.[3] Though many were pleased with the experience they gained, several respondents noted that the facility was at times so understaffed that it was “Unsafe for patients and staff.”

FINANCING

This facility works with an extensive list of contracted managed care companies such as Aetna PPO, Cigna Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and United Behavioral Health.

[1] https://goo.gl/fuUj7v
[2] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Hartgrove-Hospital/reviews
[3] https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Hartgrove-Behavioral-Health-System-Reviews-E120830_P2.htm
