Editorial Review

ABOUT SKYLAND TRAIL

Since 1989, Skyland Trail has been one of the 65 (20.7 percent) residential treatment centers in Georgia to provide long-term, reintegration-oriented services for adults. Offering programs for those struggling with primary psychiatric disorders, this center is also among the 145 (46.2 percent) in the state to tailor services to individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders. Clients receive a continuum of care progressing from residential, to full-day, and then intensive outpatient treatment, supported by transitional housing. Distinct programming and living arrangements are offered for college-age men and women and for individuals over the age of 26. While non-acute medical care is available via a Skyland clinic, detox services are not provided.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Each client participates in a plan of treatment designed to meet their individual psychosocial and psychiatric needs and circumstances, for an average stay of four to six months. Those individuals receiving treatment for drug or alcohol abuse are assigned to a therapy group addressing primary mental health conditions and a dual diagnosis group. Additional groups are offered as well, such as a men's group, a women's group, loss and grief groups, and an LGBTQ support group, which only 53 (16.9 percent) Georgia treatment facilities provide.

Treatment programs blend evidence-based modalities with holistic approaches. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are practiced in combination with holistic modalities including music, art, and horticultural therapies. Physical fitness and recreational therapeutic approaches include yoga, team sports, and structured social outings. Dual diagnosis clients participate in drug screenings and local 12-step communities. Some clients also receive vocational prep and support for transitioning back to school.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The facility employs a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, social workers, master’s level counselors, and recreational therapists, and 98.3 percent of substance abuse treatment centers in Georgia have continuing education requirements for staff. The two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date awarded staff level of experience and training four and five stars out of five.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Skyland Trail operates three residential facilities and a main campus for therapy sessions. Both the relatively new, 32-bed residence for young adults ages 18 to 25, and an additional 24-bed residence for adults over the age of 26 have private bedrooms and bathrooms. As of 2016, the median number of individuals at a non-hospital, residential treatment center was 18 clients. Photographs on the facility’s website show comfortable, modern furnishings and bright living spaces with large windows. Each room also has surrounding gardens and outdoor recreational spaces, and an exercise room and communal dining areas are all on-site.

The third residential site is comprised of 12, two-bedroom apartments that provide transitional housing for clients who have stepped down to day or intensive outpatient treatment.

Residences are not locked down.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive feedback from former clients, but secondary review sites at the time of this writing reflect alumni approval of the facility. On Yelp, six alumni provided an average rating of four out of five stars.[1] Two critical reviewers represented staff as disengaged and the treatment as unhelpful; however, the four positive reviews focused on the program’s life-saving, strengthening effects. Current client D.N. raved about the "quality and qualifications of the staff and even volunteers." In another representative review, alum L.O. wrote, “I can’t compliment the clinicians and staff highly enough. It’s a refuge and a place of empowerment.”

The reviews on Yelp that are listed as "not recommended" largely echo this praise; yet, one former client, M.T., expressed frustration with her discharge procedure, and commented, "At the exit interview, the interviewer seemed very little interested in my individual experience."[2]

Of 47 reviews and ratings on the facility’s official Facebook page, which staff can monitor, most were positive and 4.4-average stars were awarded overall.[3] One trend in the reviews, submitted by a mix of alumni, loved ones, and staff, was emphasis on the caring, committed, and insightful qualities of clinicians. The only written criticism provided was from one individual who reported a lack of follow-up communication.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing each awarded four or five stars for all but two metrics measured. The high ratings included the effectiveness of treatment, opportunities for family participation, availability of a choice of holistic therapies and counseling options, quality of treatment for co-occurring disorders, and the level of staff training and experience. "A lot of offerings for people of all interests and backgrounds. Evening and weekend programming," one of these loved ones wrote as a facility strength. Accommodations also received positive feedback. As for the lower ratings, one parent gave just three stars for the program’s policies regarding connection with the outside, and the other loved one rated admissions and discharge procedures three stars, noting, "Lack of after discharge follow up" as a facility weakness.

Similarly, four out of six loved ones reviewing Skyland Trail on Yelp would recommend the program. Three reported success in their children’s return to college or work after treatment. The two critical reviewers referenced poor communication from staff and lack of discharge planning.

On Google, where 32 users generated a 4.1-star average rating, alumni feedback was largely positive, but feedback from loved ones was more critical.[4] Two spouses both complained of problems with billing and insurance, and one critiqued the customer service and rudeness of staff.

WHAT STAFF SAY

At this time, no staffers had submitted feedback to Rehabs.com, but 12 employees on Indeed generated a 4.3-star average rating for this facility,[5] and 11 Glassdoor users produced 3.9 out of five stars overall.[6] Trends were in keeping with alumni and parent reviews, citing employee dedication and treatment effectiveness. Three reviewers were critical of high staff turnover, possibly supporting two Yelp reviews citing young and disengaged employees.

FINANCING

According to the facility’s website, residential treatment costs $28,500 per month, the day treatment program is $10,000 for 20 days, and intensive outpatient is $8,000 for 20 days. Additional fees are assessed for various services, including drug screenings, medication, and family therapy. Residential treatment is covered in-network by Aetna and Magellan and outpatient programs by several other private insurance plans. Financial assistance is available to qualifying clients.

[1] https://www.yelp.com/biz/skyland-trail-atlanta-2,
[2] https://www.yelp.com/notrecommendedreviews/skyland-trail-atlanta-2
[3] https://www.facebook.com/pg/SkylandTrail/reviews/?ref=page_internal
[4] GoogleReviews
[5] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Skyland-Trail/reviews,
[6] https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Skyland-Trail-Reviews-E717333.htm
