Editorial Review

ABOUT BEHAVIORAL HEALTH OF THE PALM BEACHES, INC.

Behavioral Health of the Palm Beaches (BHOPB) provides a continuum of detox, residential, intensive outpatient, and continuing care services for adults struggling with addiction. Treatment at the South Florida facilities supports whole-person recovery through dual diagnosis treatment and an array of specialty tracks. The organization’s executive track is offered through its luxury Seaside Palm Beach programs for men and women. BHOPB has been in operation for 20 years.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to its website, the facility caters to clients struggling with multiple addictions. Medically-supervised detox is provided for alcohol and opioids. Clients can choose to participate in evidence-based psychotherapy, holistic programming, or an integrated, individualized plan involving both.

BHOPB holistic offerings are especially oriented toward trauma recovery. Among the modalities practiced are eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR); music, art, and pet therapies; meditation; massage, and light-sound neurotherapy (LSN). Some counseling groups address particular client experiences, such as gender-specific, LGBT, young adult, spirituality, and chronic relapse. Treatment addressing other concerns, including anger management and sex addiction, is also available.

The facility’s faith-based programming can accommodate non-denominational as well as specific religious orientations. BHOPB encourages participation in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) even for non-religious clients. Family therapy and education sessions are also encouraged, and the organization touts its active alumni association.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment staff of Behavioral Health of the Palm Beaches includes board-certified psychiatrists, some with additional certification in addiction medicine, master’s-level therapists, nurses, and social workers. Many counselors have personal experience in recovery.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Photographs on the BHOPB website and Facebook featured swimming pools, private and shared bedrooms, high-end furnishings, and expansive grounds close to the beaches. According to a Florida state directory of licensed rehab facilities, BHOPB can accommodate more than 80 residents in Lake Worth and Palm Beach Shores, including 40 inpatient detox spots.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

To date, Rehabs.com has received feedback for BHOPB from four alumni -- three of a Lake Worth facility and one of West Palm. Three rated treatment effectiveness five out of five stars, while one granted just one star for its effectiveness. The former clients’ opinions were split along these lines on most aspects of accommodations and therapy.

Metrics measuring three factors emphasized by BHOPB followed this trend, including ratings of two, four, and five stars for co-occurring treatment.

Staff's Level of Training and Experience: 4/5
Holistic Offerings: 3.25/5

All four agreed that the facilities were well-maintained and two cited food as a strength.

Facility's Cleanliness and Upkeep: 4.3/5

The one critical reviewer noted a need for BHOPB to be “more patient friendly.” They indicated that the cost of treatment was not worth it, while three others reported that it was.

On Google reviews, 47 reviews for the North Palm Beach location were split nearly identically to Rehabs.com reviewers, contributing to an average rating of 3.8 out of five stars. A majority of alumni praised BHOPB’s staff, including several reporting support for special physical needs. A few reviewers noted that their attitudes changed for the better while in rehab, as reflected in a representative review from T.P.: “It was a big eye opener and helped me realize that I had more going on than just drugs and alcohol abuse.”

However, although five complimented the food (including an otherwise critical alum), multiple reviewers complained that the facility and location were not what were advertised.[1]

Reviews on the facility’s official Facebook page, which its staff may monitor, were much more consistently favorable. Of 59 ratings for BHOPB, 50 were maximum five stars, and just five were one or two stars. Along with positive comments on food and the facilities, many described being met at the airport and cared for from the time they arranged for treatment. They praised the staff for their patience, guidance, and non-judgmental approach. Complaints depicted a less structured program with not enough therapy, activities, or supervision.[2]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single review submitted to Rehabs.com by a loved one at the time of this writing was negative. J.C. gave the facility one or two stars for most of the 15 metrics measured, including its family programming. They especially criticized staff, other than medical professionals, as poorly trained. The reviewer also repeated the alumni complaint about an unsafe location of one facility.

Google reviews by loved ones tended to be positive, despite some concern expressed about poor communication with the facility. Two Facebook reviews cited financial disagreements.

FINANCING

Behavioral Health of the Palm Beaches is in-network with some insurance plans and accepts both out-of-network benefits from other insurers and private payment. Alumni tended to feel that the facilities were moderately affordable.

Affordability: 3/5

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/BHOPB/reviews/
