Editorial Review

ABOUT ORANGE COUNTY RESCUE MISSION

The Orange County Rescue Mission (OCRM) of Tustin, Calif., adjacent to Santa Ana, is a faith-based para-church organization that provides long-term transitional housing services for homeless men and women who are in recovery from substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. Under the organization’s flagship transitional living facility, an expansive, campus-like complex known as the Village of Hope (VOH), ORCM strives to both meet the basic food, clothing, and shelter needs of its program participants while addressing more complex matters of emotional, spiritual, and legal nature.

One of 699 (53.3 percent) nonprofit organizations in the state, ORCM does not provide any detoxification services. Applicants are drug tested before admission.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

All clients undergo a biopsychosocial assessment prior to beginning treatment to determine their most pressing needs. The Village of Hope is a four-phase program that may extend for up to two years, based on a client’s progress made. Over the course of the program, clients take part in a curriculum that offers up opportunities for training, education, and experience in developing life skills, finding employment, and other activities essential to healthy, sober living.

Typically, programming combines work-therapy, vocational training and internships, educational workshops, individual and family counseling, as well as faith-based activities to promote self-sufficiency and a strengthened, lasting sobriety. Clients also have access to medical and dental care, case management, prayer services and weekly discipleship classes, and leisure time. Those with children can benefit from practical, “heart based” training through VOH’s Parenting and Child Enrichment Center. On-site childcare is also available, making ORCM just one of 170 (13 percent) facilities in the state of California to offer such services.

Clients begin Phase I by working a full-time and on-site job and by attending weekly classes, counseling sessions, and chapel services. Also known as “students” at this point, clients complete regular assignments in a series of discipleship workbooks and are required to stay on grounds for the first six months of the program.

Following completion of Phase I, clients begin preparing for employment within the community. Along with group participation and chapel attendance, clients start attending workshops at ORCM’s Success Center. These workshops offer opportunity for career exploration, skills application, interviews, sending applications, creating resumes, and other skills needed to obtain a job.

Once prepared, clients begin to actively search for a job. They can also begin enrolling in school or a vocational training program. After obtaining employment, they’ll transition into Phase III, where they’re expected to maintain their full-time job and comply with other program requirements. As certain milestones are met, and readiness is demonstrated, residents prepare for graduation (Phase IV), which may involve securing safe housing, creating a budget, setting up childcare, and obtaining a reliable mode of transportation.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Village of Hope employs a large multidisciplinary team of physicians, licensed professional counselors, social workers, chaplains, case managers, child psychologists, and childcare specialists. The program also partners with community professionals and volunteers who provide specialized services such as dental care and career assistance.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The 262-bed transitional living facility known as Village of Hope is situated on a decommissioned military base. Its large, campus-like complex spans more than 150,000 square feet of facilities across five acres. Residents sleep in two restored barracks, which can accommodate up to 192 individuals.

The expansive grounds feature a 288-seat chapel and auditorium, the Parenting and Child Enrichment Center, the Success Center, two basketball courts, a children’s playground, a hair salon, and a large community garden which provides produce for the kitchen in the summer months.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

In the sole Rehabs.com survey to date, an anonymous alum celebrated nearly all aspects of Village of Hope. Despite a two-star rating for treatment effectiveness, the alum gave five out of five stars for the counseling options, family programming, staff’s level of training and experience, treatment for co-occurring disorders, and more. “They help you with a place to live and transportation and even helping you go back to school," alum M.T. wrote.

Reviews available across secondary sources held the organization and its staff in similarly high regard. On Google, for example, where more than 90 individuals awarded ORCM an excellent average rating of 4.6 out of five stars, many praised the quality of the campus and its caring staff.[1] “They have helped my family and myself for years,” Shawn, a five-star reviewer wrote in a representative statement.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

While Rehabs.com has yet to receive any feedback from loved ones, secondary sources revealed similarly favorable views and experiences amongst friends and family members.

On the organization’s official Facebook page, which it has the ability to manage, ORCM boasts an excellent average rating of 4.7 out of five stars from over 140 individuals.[2] “The Mission saved me and my children from the darkness i created and i am forever blessed and thankful for the amazing work this organization has done for me and my life and the lives of so many others,” wrote grateful mother Allysson.

FINANCING

The Orange County Rescue Mission aims to assist homeless and poor individuals in “the most cost-effective way” possible. It’s programs, such as the Village of Hope, are supported largely by private donations. For each dollar gifted, 83 cents go directly to helping the homeless.

Once clients gain employment and are able to make the commitment, ORCM may require clients to pay a fee at a nominal percentage of their weekly earnings.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/orangecountyrescuemission/reviews/?ref=page_internal
