ABOUT SALVATION ARMY- PASADENA, CA

The Salvation Army is one of the country’s largest providers of addiction services. Programs at the Salvation Army offer emotional, spiritual, and social assistance to individuals struggling with a drug and alcohol addiction. The facility in Pasadena, Calif., is one of 335 in the state (just 23.4%) to offer a residential treatment program for both male and female individuals. According to the Salvation Army’s mission statement, they are a Christian faith-based organization whose mission is to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ while meeting human needs without discrimination.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The treatment program in Pasadena offers housing, food, counseling, and both community and work therapy to help clients find the root causes of their alcohol and drug dependence. The treatment plan is based around four key principles which include: combating addiction, building work and social skills (a feature of just 84.3% of facilities in the state), regaining health and stability, and restoring families.

The facility uses work-therapy, group and individual counseling sessions, spiritual direction, and life skills development to help clients learn to live life without relying on substances. Clients build work and social skills through the physical and spiritual components of the program while they work in the organization’s thrift store. The facility aims to help clients regain their health and stability through developing a personal relationship with God. The facility hopes clients will learn to depend on God for help in life rather than escaping with drugs or alcohol. Clients will also focus on restoring their families so that they can resume healthy daily routines and reunite with kids and other loved ones.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its accommodations, but two alumni polled by Rehabs.com both gave the facility five out of five stars for the facility's accommodations and its meals & nutrition. One alum wrote that there were 110 clients total seeking treatment at the time he was in the facility. This is considerably more than the median number of clients in residential treatment facilities, which as of 2016 was 18 individuals.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff, but, one alum polled by Rehabs.com indicated that the facility staff were experienced and well-trained while another alum indicated that they were not.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date offered opposite opinions on many aspects of treatment and this facility. The first, J.M., gave the facility only two stars for treatment effectiveness, while the second, an anonymous male, gave the facility five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness.

In fact, this anonymous alum awarded the facility all high rankings, including five stars for exercise and leisure activities, family participation, counseling options, and affordability. This individual also strongly agreed when asked if the facility staff were experienced and well-trained; however, J.M. disagreed with this.

J.M. agreed when asked if the facility was clean and well maintained and if the facility offered excellent leisure, exercise, and extracurricular options. He strongly disagreed that the facility had high quality holistic offerings, indicated that family and loved ones were not able to participate in treatment through facility programming, and also indicated that the facility was not adequately equipped and staffed to treat co-occurring mental health problems in addition to substance use disorders. J.M. did agree that the facility strictly followed a 12-step model.

J.M. thought a facility strength was that it, “Forces a person to seek those skills that are needed for a successful recovery” but wrote that a weakness of the facility was, “You are there to work with focus on recovery secondary.” The anonymous alum did not indicate any weakness of the program. He felt a strength of the program was that it is a great option for recovery by giving clients “the opportunity to get your life back in order.” J.M. was neutral on whether he would recommend this facility to a friend or loved one who was considering rehab but the anonymous alum strongly agreed that he would recommend the facility.

On Google at the time of this writing, three reviewers all left perfect five-star ratings.[1] Former client T.H. raved "If you complete the 6 month residential program, you will definitely be a better person than the day you went in!"

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

At the time of this writing there has been one friend of a client polled by Rehabs.com. The friend indicated that the client stayed at the facility for more than 90 days for substance abuse treatment but the respondent did not stay in regular contact with the client, did not visit the client during their stay, and did not play an active role in the client’s treatment. The loved one did not provide any ratings for any of the metrics polled on about the facility but did leave several comments.

The respondent indicated that s/he would recommend the facility again if the loved one ever had to re-enter treatment and wrote, “Facility was successful in getting him off drugs and gainfully employed.” The respondent also agreed that s/he would recommend this facility to a friend or loved one who was considering rehab because, “Facility strictly enforced policies and appears well-organized. They offered job training and life skills preparation.” When asked for additional commentary the respondent added, “The facility has a long history of helping addicts… Their program is free, but may be difficult to get into based on high demand.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

While Rehabs.com has yet to receive feedback from facility staff to date, the sole reviewer on Indeed gave a perfect five-star rating and commented that they "help addicts get a second chance."[2]

FINANCING

The Salvation Army offers all services free of charge to participants, which is done by only 48.5% of California facilities. The Salvation Army is funded by donations as well as sales through its thrift store.

Updated March 2018

[1] https://goo.gl/MCmXz9

[2] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Salvation-Army-Adult-Rehabilitation-Center/reviews?fcountry=US&floc=Pasadena%2C+CA
