Editorial Review

ABOUT THE SALVATION ARMY ADULT REHABILITATION CENTER

The Salvation Army is one of the largest providers of addiction services in the U.S., helping nearly 150,000 addicted individuals each year. The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center in central Oakland, Calif., offers a residential program for adult men and women seeking treatment for substance abuse. Detox is not available through the program.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment at the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center begins with a referral. Clients are generally self-referred or referred from other programs. Clients meet with admissions specialists to determine if they are a good fit for the program.

Treatment consists of individual and group counseling, as well as spiritual guidance and work therapy. Clients begin the 12-steps program and work through the various steps throughout treatment. The program has a strong, mostly Christian spiritual influence, although all faiths are welcome.

The main component of treatment is work therapy. The program is built around work therapy, specifically employment in the organization’s thrift stores, which help support the program. Clients learn work-related and sober living skills that can be used after treatment to reintegrate into society.

Clients receive spiritual direction from counselors and religious leaders in the community. Their efforts focus on developing their faith and building up the spiritual resilience needed to support their sober living lifestyle. Developing social skills is also a big part of the program since clients are expected to work together throughout their stay.

Family support is encouraged throughout the program. Services can be made available to help rebuild client’s families. A specialized program is available to help parents reunite with their children.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is currently no information provided by the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center regarding its treatment staff. However, both of the individuals polled on the staff support found at this facility at the time of this writing gave it five out of five stars, and the single individual asked to evaluate staff’s level of training and experience, alum J.S., gave it three out of five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center regarding its living arrangements and related offerings. However, all three individuals polled on the facility’s cleanliness at the time of this writing gave five out of five stars. Two reviewers gave five out of five stars for accommodations, while the other gave only three stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, there has been one alum polled by Rehabs.com about this location of the Salvation Army. The alum, J.S., gave five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, accommodations & amenities, exercise and leisure opportunities, the level of staff support, and meals & nutrition. By contrast, the alum gave only three out of five stars for connectivity.

The alum indicated that the program is very hands-on and that they require you to make lots of changes to your lifestyle. “They require you to change Everything ! down to the way you dress. And the will provide appropriate Clothing if you don't have any. They don't coddle the addict. Its not up to the addict to decide how to recover that would be manipulation.” J.S. also wrote that a strength of the program was that the treatment center guides the addict to become a productive and responsible member of society.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

At the time of this writing, there have been two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com about the Oakland Salvation Army facility. Both loved ones gave five out of five stars for its accommodations, facility cleanliness, and affordability. Both gave only one star for its holistic offerings.

Parent Valerie wrote: “It is faith based and very strict. So if you need extreme structure this is a good facility. Any program works at any facility if the client wants it bad enough. My son was here 6 months and went back to using within 3 weeks. Gotta want it. His was mandated.”

FINANCING

The program at the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center is offered free of charge. The program is supported by client’s work in the Salvation Army Thrift Stores.
