ABOUT C.U.R.A., INC. – SOBER LIVING ENVIRONMENT

A Spanish acronym for Partners United to Reform Addicts (Canales Unidos Reformando Adictos), C.U.R.A. began more than 45 years ago to serve the Oakland-area Hispanic population. Today, the organization offers treatment services to all adults, many of whom are referred directly from the criminal justice system. This Oakland facility operates sober living environment for men who have previously completed residential or intensive outpatient treatment for substance abuse.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The focus of C.U.R.A's Oakland facility is to provide housing and continuing therapy for men as they transition into independent, sober living. Clients must meet certain medical and legal qualifications, and HIV-positive individuals are accepted as well as those court orders. A typical stay is for three or more months. The facility is among the 62.2 percent of California treatment facilities to offer specialized programming for individuals affected by HIV/AIDS.

While participating in structured living arrangements and activities similar to the therapeutic community approach of its residential rehab facility in Fremont, clients work toward obtaining full-time jobs and strengthening local support systems and healthy habits. They gain work experience through the C.U.R.A. temporary work assignment program, responding to calls for landscaping, painting, office work, and other jobs, and contributing toward covering the cost of treatment and housing.

The organization also offers seminars designed to help clients understand and express emotions through making visual art, writing poetry, and analyzing music. A Rehabs.com survey also indicated that the facility may incorporate 12-step facilitation into programming.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is currently no information available from the facility regarding the credentials of its treatment team. One of the three individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date rated the staff's level of training and experience just two stars out of five, while another reviewer wrote: "They need higher quality counselors." Another, however, wrote that the "staff was quite supportive."

The health services information website CiteHealth reports that some staff members are bilingual in Spanish and English.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The sober living facility is a three-story, Victorian-style house with 34 beds in a mixed commercial and multi-family residential neighborhood. Additional details regarding living arrangements and related offerings are not available on the facility's website, but data from the three reviews submitted to Rehabs.com reflect overall positive opinions. Two reviewers highlighted the facility's cleanliness.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The three individuals polled by Rehabs.com on the facility gave mixed reviews. One anonymous alum gave four out of five stars for the overall effectiveness of the program. Although they did not graduate, they felt that the co-ed nature of the facility was a weakness. However, this criticism referred to the residential program, not the sober living facility.

Offering a five-star rating for the effectiveness of group counseling, though three stars for the facility's ability to resolve conflict and one star for the respect shown to clients, J.D.C. wrote: "It was a very clean facility and the staff was quite supportive."

Three Google reviewers gave the facility ratings ranging from one to four stars out of five. A three-star reviewer cited "a free bed," with no reference to treatment. The most critical alum cited a lack of privacy, though the more positive reviewer highlighted the positive experience of being part of a community in rehab.[1]

FINANCING

Information regarding treatment costs is currently not available on the facility's website; however, according to CiteHealth, some payment assistance is offered on a case-by-case basis. The work therapy component of treatment help to offset cost, and the one individual polled on this aspect indicated that the treatment was worth its cost.

[1] GoogleReviews
