ABOUT SAFE REFUGE

Formerly known as the Substance Abuse Foundation (SAF), Safe Refuge is a nonprofit that treats adult men and women struggling with substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health disorders. Based on a large campus on Long Beach in Southern California, the center specializes in treating underserved communities, including veterans and those living with HIV/AIDS (for whom there are dedicated services at 24.3 percent and 26.1 percent of California facilities, respectively), as well as the homeless, parolees, and low-income individuals. However, any adult man or woman can seek services here.

Safe Refuge provides long-term residential care and outpatient programming, plus supportive housing and aftercare โ€” but medical detox is not available on-site. It's among the 33.6 percent of California-based, non-hospital facilities that offer residential stays longer than 30 days.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment is multidisciplinary, combining 12-step meetings with counseling groups, drug and alcohol testing, recreational and social activities, and case management. There are also extensive specialist treatment groups, including classes on parenting, HIV/AIDS, and vocational services, as well as dedicated programming for the LGBT community (for whom 27.1 percent of California-based facilities provide specialist services).

The residential program lasts 90 to 180 days, or more, as needed. Safe Refuge also offers several levels of outpatient care: intensive day treatment, which meets up to eight hours a day for five or more days a week; day treatment, which meets up to five hours a day, three or more days a week; and a relapse prevention program that meets for up to three hours per week. Some clients live in Safe Refuge's sober housing while they complete outpatient programs. There's also a year-long outpatient program that provides education for parents.

Clients who successfully complete a residential or outpatient program are eligible for a year of aftercare services, which include crisis counseling, relapse prevention training, and assistance in finding housing. There's also an alumni group that hosts social events year-round.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Safe Refuge employs a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals, certified drug/alcohol counselors, and certified domestic violence counselors. The three individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the staff's level of training and experience gave it a three-star rating and two four-star ratings.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The Safe Refuge campus comprises eleven houses and two apartment buildings. The treatment provider also offers one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments for men, women, and families requiring transitional housing during after or a treatment program โ€” placing it among the 4.8 percent of California facilities that provide beds for residents' children. All three of the individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave Safe Refuge four- and five-star ratings for its cleanliness.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Both alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date would recommend treatment at Safe Refuge. Both reviewers gave the facility four stars for its ability to treat co-occurring disorders, but mediocre-to-poor ratings of two and three stars for its holistic offerings. They disagreed on the quality of the center's family participation, which received a three-star and a five-star rating. In their comments, one reviewer praised the center's openness, writing: "Accomidates anyone regardless of financial, religious, or sexual orientation, and houses children with parents." "They really want you to get it," added the other reviewer.

Safe Refuge also has mostly positive feedback on secondary sites, with average ratings of 4.7 out of five stars based on 18 reviews on Google, 4.8 stars based on 34 reviews on Facebook (where the facility can manage its own page), and a one-star rating, a three-star rating, and a five-star rating spread between Yelp and YellowPages.com.[1] [2] [3] [4]

The few negative reviews tended to cite other clients not taking the program seriously. However, numerous clients expressed deep gratitude to the program for turning their lives around. "Got my sobriety, my life, family back. No regrets on coming here. If your serious about getting sober and a second chance at life this place is it," Jennifer wrote in a typical comment on Google. In particular, clients repeatedly praised the structure they found at Safe Refuge.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date would not recommend treatment at Safe Refuge, writing: "Weak support for females. Not a place for addict who is apt to relapse." However, they also praised the variety of people served by Safe Refuge, and noted that the center is "good for those who are motivated to recover." They gave the facility three stars for its family participation, two stars for its counseling options and ability to treat co-occurring disorders, and one star for its holistic offerings.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Staff posting on Indeed paint a mostly positive picture of Safe Refuge, with some notes of complaint.[5] In 10 reviews (that gave an average rating of 3.8 out of five stars), the isolated complaints cited corruption, a very large client-to-staff ratio, and high staff turnover โ€” all of which could negatively affect the quality of care.

However, the majority of reviews gave glowing praise for fellow staff and for Safe Refuge's commitment to its clients. "Management are caring, pro-active and knowledgeable. The patients needs were first and the recidivism was at a low," one reviewer wrote in a typical comment.

FINANCING

Safe Refuge accepts Medi-Cal (California's Medicaid, accepted at 35.2 percent of California-based facilities) as well as self-payment, and helps clients determine whether they're eligible for government funding. A sliding fee scale is available, too, based on clients' ability to pay. All three of the individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility five stars for its affordability.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/Safe-Refuge-764120340344089/reviews/?ref=page_internal
[3] https://www.yelp.com/biz/substance-abuse-foundation-of-long-beach-long-beach-3?osq=substance+abuse+foundation
[4] https://www.yellowpages.com/long-beach-ca/mip/substance-abuse-foundation-of-long-beach-474266703?lid=474266703
[5] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Safe-Refuge/reviews
