ABOUT ALVARADO PARKWAY INSTITUTE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SYSTEM

With its primary facility located in La Mesa, Calif., 10 miles east of San Diego, Alvarado Parkway Institute (API) Behavioral Health System provides a full continuum of treatment programs for adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders. Offering evidence-based inpatient care and outpatient programs of various intensities, the Joint Commission accredited facility in La Mesa helps clients develop healthy living routines and support systems for sustained sobriety.

On-site medical detoxification services and an opioid detoxification program are also both offered. The facility is one of only 15.1% of facilities in California to offer on-site detox.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, clients undergo an initial mental health and substance abuse assessment to help clinicians determine an appropriate level of care. API adheres to an evidence-based, recovery-oriented approach to treatment. Clients requiring detoxification and/or stabilization are referred to the inpatient program, where they will encounter a supportive and structured environment focused on rapid stabilization, community reintegration, and discharge planning.

During inpatient treatment, residents take part in a therapeutic schedule of daily individual psychotherapy sessions with their primary psychiatrist, intensive group counseling, and educational workshops on improving coping and life skills. To assist in the detoxification process and to alleviate cravings, API also makes use of medication-assisted therapy, such as Suboxone, as well as medication management procedures to help stabilize individuals with a primary psychiatric disorder or a dual diagnosis.

Several different outpatient programs are offered. At the highest level of care, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) includes sessions on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., while an intensive outpatient program (IOP) consists of multiple three-hour sessions each week. The outpatient-based opiate detoxification program makes use of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in conjunction with individual, group, and family therapy. Another option for those with prior daytime commitments, IOP sessions are held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings.

Beyond its core curriculum, API incorporates music and recreation therapy and encourages family members to get involved. Prior to program completion, clients and their assigned clinicians form an extensive discharge plan, which may include referrals to community-based resources and less-intensive care options.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

API boasts psychiatrist-led treatment teams complete with nursing staff, case managers, social workers, substance abuse counselors, and recreation and music therapists. Out of five stars, the three individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the staff's level of experience ratings of two, four, and five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

API of La Mesa features 66 beds in double occupancy rooms. The facility runs three separate units designated to issue-specific populations and provides daily meals catered to preference and dietary restrictions. Residents have access to laundry machines, though cell phones and laptops are not permitted.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The single former client polled by Rehabs.com to date reported a very poor experience. The anonymous alum left one-star ratings for the facility’s counseling options, the amount of family participation, and its discharge planning. “It was one of the worst experiences of my life,” they wrote. “I would never recommend this place to anyone.”

Feedback sourced from secondary reviews sites were mostly in line with this negative report.
