ABOUT MOUNTAIN VIEW HOSPITAL

Located outside of Gadsden in rural northern Alabama, Mountain View Hospital is a 108-bed private psychiatric hospital offering inpatient and outpatient care for adults, adolescents, and children. Prior to becoming a behavioral health hospital, the center was a tuberculosis sanatorium, an alcoholism treatment hospital, and a nursing home. It's now owned by the private firm Southeastern Psychiatric Managements.

Mountain View Hospital is equipped to treat a range of psychiatric and behavioral-health disorders, including substance use disorder. It offers one of Alabama's eight hospital-based medical detox programs, in addition to a range of short-term inpatient programs, outpatient care, and a residential home for adolescents — one of Alabama's 32 programs specifically for adolescents.

There are satellite outpatient clinics in the nearby communities of Anniston, Fort Payne, Opelika, and Montgomery.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Mountain View Hospital’s website notes that the center’s treatment philosophy is based on a holistic approach that includes a nurturing, supportive, and highly structured environment.

All new inpatients receive a comprehensive evaluation, including physical, psychiatric, and chemical dependency assessments. They're then referred, as appropriate, to the Child Center, the Adolescent Center, or the Adult Center. For those struggling with acute symptoms, there's also a locked Intensive Care Center. All inpatient stays are designed to return clients to community life as soon as possible, and to keep them in the least restrictive level of care possible.

For adolescents, there's also a residential facility providing longer-term stays, called Summit Crest Lodge. The Lodge offers a home-like atmosphere where residents can continue with their education while receiving treatment.

Chemical dependency treatment is available for both adolescents and adults, and the goal of treatment is not only to achieve sobriety and a healthy lifestyle, but also to provide tools with which to respond to life’s inevitable pressures. Across its programs, the hospital uses individual, group, and family therapy; individualized behavior modification programs; recreation and activity therapy; aftercare planning; and specialty groups focusing on, for instance, sexual abuse, communication skills, and issues specific to the children of alcoholics.

Outpatient services are also available at the Gasden location, though they're provided through Grandview Behavioral Health Centers, an independent practice of clinicians. Services at the clinics include case management, medication management, psychiatric assessment and diagnosis, family and individual therapy, and employee assistance services.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Mountain View Hospital employs a multidisciplinary team that boasts more than 230 mental-health professionals, including physicians, clinical psychologists, professional counselors, registered nurses, psychiatric technicians, recreational therapists, social workers, and dietitians.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

According to Mountain View’s website, the hospital offers 68 beds, plus another 40-bed unit for adolescents. The five alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the hospital lukewarm feedback for its accommodations.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Of the five reviews submitted to Rehabs.com to date, one is somewhat negative, two are somewhat positive, and the other two are entirely positive.

Even the negative reviewer wrote that the "doctors, nurses, and counselors were very caring" — an observation repeated by other clients. And the reviewers also repeatedly praised the center's aftercare planning: "My aftercare consists of indefinite therapy," wrote one anonymous alum.

However, the negative reviewer wrote anonymously that "there was absolutely nothing to do but sit in a room and color," and another alum complained that the services were just "adequate."

Mountain View Hospital has mixed feedback on secondary sites, with a 2.9 out o five-star average rating based on the opinions of 12 people on Facebook and a 2.9 out of five-star average rating based on 26 reviews on Google.[1] [2] The negative reviews include some serious repeated complaints, citing poor treatment from staff and harmful behavior from fellow clients — comments that most often applied to the adolescent center. "I left worse than i came. the staff is terrible, they scream all night and have no respect for the patients, they treated me like i was nothing but an object," Libby wrote in one typical comment on Google.

But several reviewers praised individual staff members, in particular the doctors. "(The doctor) is like a horse whisper for people. Staff was awesome," Claudia wrote in a typical positive comment on Google.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Secondary sites yield excellent feedback from staff, with three five-star ratings left on Indeed.[3] The reviews described a "wonderful and friendly place to work" with plenty of training opportunities. "My own educational inadequacies were remedied through supervision and furthering my education," one former employee wrote.

FINANCING

Mountain View Hospital is among the 25.7 percent of Alabama facilities that accept Medicare, and the 57.4 percent that accept Medicaid (though Medicaid is only accepted for individuals aged up to 21). The hospital also accepts private insurance and will negotiate a sliding fee scale based on individual and family circumstances.

[1] https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mountain-View-Hospital/117745644908759
[2] GoogleReviews
[3] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Mountainview-Hospital/reviews?fcountry=US&floc=Gadsden%2C+AL
