Services & Treatment

Editorial Review

ABOUT AURORA RESIDENTIAL ALTERNATIVES – SPOONER

Aurora Residential Alternatives (ARA) is a division of Aurora Community Services, which has been providing mental health treatment in Wisconsin for more than 30 years. Surrounded by lakes and rivers, the Spooner facility is one of five locations that offers residential services to adults with developmental disabilities, chronic mental illness, or traumatic brain injuries.

Serving more than 350 people in about 90 different homes throughout the state, this rehabilitation program specializes in transitional care and teaching life skills. It is also one of 97 (35.3 percent) facilities in the state with specifically-tailored programming for individuals dealing with co-occurring mental health disorders.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to the facility's website, treatment received by ARA is individualized to each client. To be eligible, individuals must be at least 18 years old and already have received a primary diagnosis for a mental illness.

Clients must also agree to live up to the expectations of the program and follow their individualized service plans (ISPs), which outline the type of care the individual will receive as well as how they should behave. A behavioral support plan (BSP) may be written for those who need extra attention for their behavioral challenges.

There are many residential options for both those with mental or developmental disabilities. Clients can stay in supervised living arrangements, licensed adult family homes, or licensed community-based residential facilities. ARA also offers supportive home care and respite services. Length of stay depends on each client’s needs, and the homes can serve as transitional living or long-term care.

Residents attend classes on daily living skills, stress management, and conflict resolution, as well as assistance with medications and accessing resources from the greater community. The Spooner location also offers counseling services for addictions, marital issues, and eating disorders.

ARA residents can receive vocational services to facilitate finding employment. Staff assess clients through work simulated tasks, job tryouts, and interviews about their skills and experience. Staff then conduct searches, reach out to employers, and set up interviews for the individual.

Once employment is secured, the program offers short- and long-term coaching to monitor progress and provide other assistance to ensure success in the workplace. In Wisconsin, ARA is among the 29.7 percent of facilities to provide employment counseling or training for clients.

Aurora Community Services also allows clients to utilize their 24/7 call center. Services offered over the phone include wellness checks, medication monitoring, referrals to community resources, and crisis response.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The center's website notes staff is available 24/7 to assist clients and is mostly made up of trained and experienced community living assistants. Board members include persons with experience in psychology, health care, and education.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The facility's website indicates supervised living arrangements house one to two people, licensed adult family homes hold between three and four people, while licensed community-based residential facilities can house up to eight clients each. Both room and board are included. The sole alum surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave one out of five stars for accommodations and amenities, but five stars for overall cleanliness and maintenance.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The single alum polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided negative feedback. This former client gave one out of five stars in a number of categories, including treatment effectiveness, holistic offerings, family participation, and the staff's level of training and experience. A higher rating of three stars was awarded for the center's counseling options, but still, this individual strongly disagreed when asked whether or not they would recommend the center to others.

"Try a different place," they wrote. "Coffee was good but employees were not."

Contrastingly, two former clients on Google as of this writing both provided perfect five-star ratings.[1] Both remarked upon the positive environment in their written comments, and J.M. added, "Warm and inviting staff. Couldn't ask for more caring people."

WHAT STAFF SAY

Rehabs.com has yet to receive employment feedback to date. However, on Indeed, 16 employees gave the organization, as a whole, an average rating of 3.4 out of five stars. Although employees tended to praise coworkers, some were critical of upper management. "The individuals are great, the homes are clean, but the management is abysmal," one representative reviewer wrote.

FINANCING

According to the facility's website, Aurora Community Services is one of 162 (59.3 percent) in the state that accepts Medicare and one of 235 (86.1 percent) facilities to accept Medicaid. Additionally, this facility accepts most private insurance providers as well as private pay.
