ABOUT THE SALVATION ARMY SEATTLE'S ADULT REHABILITATION CENTERS

The Salvation Army operates a nationwide network of Adult Rehabilitation Centers (ARCs), including locations in Ohio, Florida, and Virginia. The ARC of Seattle, Wa., provides long-term residential treatment to adults struggling with substance use disorder. Detoxification services are not provided on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Before admission, clients may undergo an initial assessment to ensure the facility offers an adequate level of care, as treatment is not suitable for individuals struggling with chronic co-occurring mental health disorders. In order to participate in the program, clients must commit to at least six months of residential treatment. Residential programs that are not hospital-based and last longer than 30 days are available in just eight percent of substance abuse treatment facilities in Washington.

The program adheres to a therapeutic community model of treatment, which emphasizes peer support, social interaction, and structured scheduling. Residents participate individual and group counseling sessions, education classes, therapeutic recreation, and spiritual guidance workshops.

Treatment is also largely founded in the 12-step model of recovery. Clients are introduced to the fellowship's philosophy and practices, attend 12-step meetings, study 12-step literature, and perform associated "step-work." Clients may also attend church services, participate in Bible studies, attend spiritual counseling sessions, and give devotionals.

The ARC of Richmond incorporates work therapy into programming, typically after 30 days of treatment. While continuing to participate in required treatment activities, residents are assigned a full-time work schedule to support the Salvation Army organization. In most cases, residents assist with the daily operations of the organization’s thrift stores, which help fund treatment services. In 2017, 33 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities in Washington provided employment counseling or training for its clients.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Although there is no information available regarding staff credentials, the one alum surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave Seattle's ARC four out of five stars for its staff's level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Typically, Salvation Army's ARCs provide housing in simple dorm-like facilities. To date, the one former client polled by Rehabs.com gave Seattle's ARC three out of five stars for its cleanliness and general upkeep.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The sole alum polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave Seattle's ARC mostly positive feedback. The anonymous respondent indicated that treatment was effective and awarded the program five out of five stars for its counseling options, its 12-step programming, and its faith-based focus. When asked, on a scale from one to five, if they would recommend the facility, the alum gave a rating of five.

Seattle's ARC also faired well on Yelp[2], earning an average rating of 4.5 out of five stars based on 16 reviews (eight of which were unrecommended). The majority of former clients who left comments described the program as an effective and affordable option for addiction treatment. "This program, once embraced, brought great change. It helped me in ways I never imagined. I would encourage anyone struggling with any sort of addiction to seek out an ARC in their area," Lisa wrote in a representative review.

WHAT FRIENDS AND FAMILY SAY

All six loved ones who evaluated Seattle's ARC on Yelp gave it four or five stars and it positive feedback. In a representative review, C.C., whose son attended the program, wrote: "I am so very impressed with this program...The beneficiaries for the Salvation Army, work for Salvation Army and they get counseling, room and board, and spiritual focus. They are a very supportive and close group of people."

FINANCING

Treatment at Seattle's ARC is free of cost, and the program is funded by private donations and the sales from the Salvation Army's local thrift stores. It's one of just five substance abuse treatment facilities in Washington that provide treatment at no cost.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/salvation-army-adult-rehabilitation-center-san-diego-2
