Editorial Review

ABOUT RESCUE MISSION MINISTRIES - RECOVERY PROGRAMS FOR ADDICTION

Rescue Mission Ministries is a Christian organization in Roanoke, Va., which provides physical, social, and spiritual support to the homeless. Its Recovery Program for Addiction is a long-term residential facility that offers spiritually-aimed rehabilitation services, including education programming, to men and women, regardless of their religious affiliation. It is one of only 23 facilities across the state of Virginia that offers long-term residential treatment.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The Recovery Program for Addiction accepts new clients four times a year, with separate intake days for men and women. Drug testing is required, and clients must go through detox before beginning treatment. Detox services are available on-site, a service offered at only 14 long-term residential facilities (about 6 percent of total facilities) in the state of Virginia.

The program, which is based on the 12-Steps, prioritizes of learning as a key to recovery. Residents participate in a four-phase drug and alcohol rehab program, which includes classes, on-site community service assignments, church participation, and step-work with a sponsor. Clients may work on GED-prep, job skills training, or creative art. Throughout the recovery process, clients also contribute to community service projects. Involvement in a church is also expected.

The final phase focuses on securing employment and sober housing. After completing the residential recovery program, some men and women continue as volunteer peer mentors or in paid work positions at the mission’s thrift store or other outlets.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Little information is available from the facility regarding treatment team members, but the website mentions managers, sponsors, chaplains, and also encourages volunteers to get involved with the mission.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding living arrangements in the Recovery Program; however, it is clear that men and women are housed separately on the mission’s campus. The facility provides meals, clothing and personal hygiene supplies, and residents also have access to legal, medical and behavioral health services through the facility’s clinic. The mission also hosts multi-denominational chapel services nightly. Pottery and metal arts classes are available and designed to engage participants through spiritual reflection, emotion management, and physical dexterity.

Those who submitted reviews to Rehabs.com had mixed feelings about the accommodations, rating them anywhere from two to five stars for the facility’s cleanliness and upkeep and two to three for exercise and leisure opportunities. The one alum and the one staff member who submitted reviews to Rehabs.com rated meals and nutrition just one star apiece; however a loved one offered the food four stars. Some reviewers on the mission’s Facebook reported that the residences are shared with the community shelter.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

To date, one client submitted a mixed review to Rehabs.com. The anonymous alum gave high marks for accommodations, but rated the level of staff’s training and experience just one star and wrote that there were “some friendly staff,” but added “not alot of staff that really cares alot for the people.” He or she gave just two stars for the likeliness of recommending the facility to others.

Reviewers on secondary review sites also offered mixed ratings. On Google 77 reviewers rated the mission at-large 4.1 stars.[1] However, specific mention of the treatment facility was sparse, and commentary more negative. Mary wrote that “some of the staff have no bussiness being there or in the positions they hold. However, she still rated the program a perfect five-stars and reported that the program helped her recover from her addiction.

The mission’s Facebook page has 43 reviews with an average rating of 3.7.[2] However, few referenced the addiction recovery program. Two who did characterized the treatment as life-saving. Many reviewers highlighted the religious service attendance requirements.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The loved one polled by Rehabs.com gave the program a mediocre review. They awarded four stars for the effectiveness of treatment and opportunities for family involvement, and threes and fours for all aspects of accommodations.

WHAT STAFF SAY

By contrast, the one former employee polled gave low ratings of one or two stars for accommodations, including meals and cleanliness. While the reviewer described the staff as caring, they also noted that some staff members were “not highly trained to handle addicts and their behavior.”

FINANCING

There is currently no information provided on the facility's website regarding its costs. Both individuals polled by Rehabs.com on the program’s affordability gave five-star ratings.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] FacebookReviews
