Services & Treatment

Editorial Review

ABOUT THE HEALING PLACE

Since its inception in 2005, CARITAS’ The Healing Place has been the only long-term recovery program in Virginia for adult men struggling with substance abuse. The Richmond-based nonprofit offers non-traditional, cost-effective treatment for individuals who might otherwise lack the resources to get treatment. In order to be considered eligible for treatment, prospective clients must be homeless, at least 18 years old, and a resident of the Greater Richmond area. Non-medical detox is available, though referrals can be made for those in need of medical detox.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The Healing Place features three different services: an overnight shelter, a social (non-medical) detox, and a peer-to-peer based innovative recovery program. Typically completed within two to seven days, a main goal of non-medical detox is to attract people into the recovery program.

According to the facility’s website, the 12-step based recovery program has five distinct phases, and is designed to be completed over the course of 12 and 18 months. In addition to 12-step sponsorship and meetings, treatment incorporates a weekly family program, free of charge and open to anybody with a loved one struggling with addiction. For two hours each Thursday evening, clients and their families discuss various topics that center around addiction, providing participants with tools to address their substance abuse.

Though not a religious organization itself, The Healing Place partners with Northstar Community, a non-traditional, Christian church with a 12-step focus. Clients have access to services on Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings.

In addition, successful graduates of the educational part of The Healing Place’s programming are eligible for five weeks of intensive job preparation through the CARITAS Works program.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Most of the treatment team at the non-medical facility bring first-hand experience of addiction to the table. The facility’s website maintains that the staff “are not doctors or nurses, and they do not give clients any medication.”

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The Healing Place provides basic but comprehensive services such as three daily meals, a bed to sleep, basic healthcare, and help with medications. At later stages of recovery treatment, clients are permitted use of cell phones, books, cable TV, and exercise equipment. They may also be allotted times to leave the premises during weekday afternoons.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing only one alum has responded to the Rehabs.com survey. The alum wrote that the facility's programming was difficult and intensive but effective and rewarding. Alum J.M. wrote: "its one of the most rigerious programs in the country and it works for those who work it. nothing can compre to it in my opinion." The alum rated many metrics a perfect five-stars, and noted that he was given 25 hours of individual counseling per week.

Reviews on secondary sites were very positive. On Google, where the facility has received an average rating of 4.2 out of five stars based on 42 reviews, Brian called his experience at The Healing Place the best of his life: “The experience gave me my life back and proved to me this life is worth living.” [1] On Facebook, where the facility may have the ability to edit their own page, The Healing Place has an average rating of 4.8 out of five stars across 59 reviews. [2]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

At the time of this writing there have been two friends and family members of clients who have been polled by Rehabs.com. One anonymous loved one gave the facility perfect five-star ratings across a variety of metrics, including treatment effectiveness, cleanliness, exercise options, staff support, and pricing. The other loved one praised the respect shown by the facility's staff and wrote: "I saw the way this facility was able to help my family/ loved on and I could not be more grateful."

WHAT STAFF SAY

There was one former staff member, C.T.H., who was polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing. C.T.H. reported that there were “between 5 or 6” licensed medical professionals who were on staff at the facility, and gave the facility five out of five stars when asked to rate leadership’s ability to inspire loyalty/sense of community of patients, their willingness to put the patient's interests first, and the overall quality of executive management/leadership.

C.T.H. also added, “The social model of recovery works. There success rate is over 65% for those who make it for 12 months and the % gets greater the longer the person stays clean and sober.”

FINANCING

The Healing Place strives to make long-term residential care possible through its highly affordable pricing. According to the facility’s website, the facility "provides services regardless of a client’s financial situation."

[1]https://goo.gl/N8DIaz
[2]https://www.facebook.com/pg/thprichmond/reviews/?ref=page_internal
