Editorial Review

ABOUT THE LAURELS RECOVERY CENTER

Situated in the small community of Lebanon, Va., The Laurels Recovery Center provides short-term residential treatment for adults struggling with chemical dependency and co-occurring mental health disorders. Part of Cumberland Mountain Community Services, which covers Buchanan, Russell, and Tazewell counties, the center offers on-site detoxification (though the facility notes that it is not equipped to handle medical emergencies such as delirium tremens or severe respiratory or cardio vascular issues).

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Priority admission is given to intravenous users, pregnant females, and individuals with co-occurring disorders. The program consists of two phases: Phase I is detox and stabilization and Phase II consists of residential treatment. To assist in stabilization, clients undergo an initial psychiatric evaluation. If applicable, medication-assisted therapy may help curb opiate cravings and alleviate withdrawal symptoms.

After stabilization, clients participate in a structured schedule of 12-step involvement, one-on-one therapy, group counseling sessions, and educational classes. The treatment program is strengths-based and person-centered. For individuals with co-occurring disorders, medication management may also be a part of treatment.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The Laurels Recovery Center’s leadership includes a licensed clinical social worker and a certified substance abuse counselor.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

According to the facility's website, The Laurels Recovery Center offers double occupancy rooms with private storage for personal belongings. Collectively, the three alumni and three loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility an average rating of 3.33 out of five stars for its accommodations and amenities.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, three alumni submitted mixed feedback to Rehabs.com, indicating that while The Laurels Recovery Center provided effective treatment, its holistic and extracurricular activities were lacking. Two of the three respondents gave the facility high four- and five out of five-star ratings for its treatment effectiveness, its staff experience, and its level of family participation. “I have been drug free for over 10 years thanks to the laurels i would recommend them to anyone,” wrote Jeff in a representative review.

But lower ratings of one and two out of five stars were awarded to the facility by all three alumni for its inclusion of holistic treatment methods and its exercise/leisure activities. In addition, two out of the three reviewers gave the rehab one and two stars for its counseling options, and one anonymous alum noted: “No options like yoga, meditation, etc. Needs to realize that people respond to different treatment options to go along with their rehab.” Jeff agreed and added: “Not enough of extracurricular activity.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The three loved ones surveyed by Rehabs.com to date also provided The Laurels Recovery Center with mixed feedback. They awarded the facility one and two out of five stars for its holistic treatment options, and reported limited communication with clients during treatment. At the same time, two out of the three loved ones gave the rehab high four-star ratings for its treatment effectiveness, as well as four and five stars for its counseling options, its staff level of experience, and its ability to treat co-occurring disorders. "There are very limited resources available but they do a good job," wrote Carlene in a representative review.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Melissa, the one former staffer polled by Rehabs.com to date, gave The Laurels Recovery Center a positive review, awarding the facility five out of five stars across most evaluated metrics, including the program’s overall quality of leadership, and indicated that she had no concerns about the care provided. The only weakness she noted was that treatment was too short.

FINANCING

According to the program’s website, individuals will receive treatment regardless of their ability to pay. If applicable, program costs are determined on a sliding scale.
