ABOUT KENNER ARMY HEALTH CLINIC - BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

Kenner Army Health Clinic is the health center for the major US Army post of Fort Lee, in southeastern Virginia. Alongside a wide array of medical and dental services, the clinic offers outpatient services for addiction, dual diagnosis, and a range of other mental and behavioral health disorders. This is one of the the only 31 (13.9 percent) facilities in the state that provides programming for veterans, one of the 21 (9.4 percent) with services for active duty members, and one of the only 17 (7.6 percent) with a track for military family members.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Services are available on a walk-in basis.

Kenner Army Health Clinic provides little detail about its addiction treatment program, though the behavioral health department's website notes that services include psychological testing and evaluations, therapy, and medication management. Counseling is available in individual and family settings.

A staff member polled by Rehabs.com indicated that treatment was not primarily based on the 12-Steps, and that the center frequently used motivational interviewing (MI) and incentives.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff; however, the single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date (themselves a staffer) gave the facility four out of five stars for the credentials of both its mental health and its medical staff.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews directly from alumni of the behavioral health department, and secondary sites yielded only reviews of the clinic as a whole, rather than the behavioral health department in particular. Those reviews were mixed: the center had an average rating of 2.5 stars based on 31 reviews on Google,[1] as well as 2.5-star rating based on eight reviews on Yelp to date.[2]

The reviewers often praised the center's staff, frequently noting in particular their politeness. However, the reviewers also noted, often with intense frustration, their difficulties in getting appointments, occasional long wait times, and inadequate care once they did get an appointment. The pharmacy in particular was called out for its long wait times. "This has been a great disappointment. They have consistently rescheduled my appointments, there is a varying level of care amongst providers," one-star reviewer E.C. representatively wrote on Google.

WHAT STAFF SAY

The single staffer polled by Rehabs.com to date would recommend the behavioral health department. "I love my staff and facility," they wrote, though their comments reflected some of the frustrations with limited resources that also crept into the alumni comments found on secondary sites: "Not enough space, personnel for Pharmacy, especially Refill pharmacy," they wrote, giving the facility three stars for its overall treatment effectiveness and five stars for its willingness to put clients' interests first.

CONCLUSION

As an army-run facility, Kenner Army Health Clinic accepts TriCare.

Stephen Baker, the director of public affairs at Kenner Army Health Clinic, was quoted on Progress-Index.com in 2014 as saying that seeking treatment for mental health disorders "will not hinder career development... By seeking help, service members build personal strength that will help them overcome future challenges. Department of Defense policy states that a service memberβs decision to seek mental healthcare should not in and of itself adversely impact that personβs ability to obtain or maintain a national security position,β he said. The remarks were made in response to a suicide at Fort Lee, a phenomenon the center has long battled.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/kenner-army-health-clinic-fort-lee?osq=Kenner+Army+Health+Clinic+-+Behavioral+Health
