Editorial Review

ABOUT HARRISON HOUSE OF VIRGINIA

Located in the small city of Annandale, 13 miles southwest of Washington, DC, Harrison House of Virginia offers outpatient treatment and sober living services to men and women struggling with substance use disorder. The center is now operated by Recovery Unplugged, a treatment network based in Florida, which provides recovery programming based on innovative musical therapies. Clients are welcome regardless of their musical backgrounds. Medical detox is not available on-site, and clients needing to detox may be referred to local hospitals.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

All programs include music-based therapies, including music appreciation, composition exercises, lyric writing, and performance. Recovery Unplugged holds that the emotional connection music can offer helps clients to open up to their vulnerabilities and the realities of their situation. Clients also participate in relapse prevention training, therapeutic journaling, and counseling designed to help them address the root cause of their addiction.

Treatment begins with an evaluation, which is used to establish the best course of treatment. Clients who require detox may be referred to a vetted local center before returning for treatment.
Recovery Unplugged at Harrison House offers two levels of treatment: a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program (IOP) (offered at 14.3 and 37.2 percent of Virginia-based facilities, respectively).

The PHP is a short-term, intensive program, with the added option of staying in a sober living facility. The IOP lasts a month, during which clients attend multiple sessions each week. Aftercare treatment consists of individual sessions with a counselor.

The center also offers medication-assisted treatment (MAT) using Vivitrol (in use at 20.6 percent of Virginia-based facilities). Vivitrol is an opioid antagonist sometimes used to treat opioid and alcohol dependencies.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Harrison House doesn't currently publish any information about its staff's qualifications, but the single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date on the staff's level of training and experience gave it four out of five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The facility doesn't currently publish any information about its accommodations or amenities, though photos published on the center's website indicated a family-style home with a garden. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center's exercise/leisure offerings and cleanliness gave the survey metrics five stars and four stars, respectively, and described the setting as "home like."

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Both of the alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date gave positive feedback, awarding the center four- and five-star ratings for the effectiveness of its treatment. "It Works," one alum wrote simply. The other alum, Katherine, was polled on the facility's performance in a variety of treatment metrics, and gave it three stars for its holistic offerings and ability to treat co-occurring disorders, and four or five stars in all the remaining categories, including four stars for its family participation and counseling options.

"Nice option for someone who does not need rigidity, confinement of lockdown facility," Katherine wrote, though she also reported a lack of individual counseling.

Harrison House also has mostly positive feedback on secondary sites, with a four out of five-star average rating based on four reviews on Google, and a perfect five-star average rating based on nine opinions on Facebook (where the facility can manage its own page).[1] [2]

The reviewers repeatedly described the program as life-saving, and praised the caring staff and homey atmosphere. "The Program & Staff at Harrison House saved my life in more ways than one.
