Editorial Review

ABOUT THE WINDHAM CENTER FOR PSYCHIATRIC CARE

Operated by Springfield Medical Care Systems, a not-for-profit, community-based general health care system, Windham Center for Psychiatric Care provides residential care services for adults who live in Vermont's Windham and Windsor Counties. The facility provides behavioral and mental health care in conjunction with general health care services, including methods of treating substance abuse and co-occurring substance disorders.

Clients may be referred by crisis teams and professionals, such as doctors, mental health professionals, and drug and alcohol professionals. The facility can accept both voluntary and involuntary admissions. Springfield Medical Care Systems also offers outpatient counseling, but these services are integrated into the organization’s primary health care offices, and not provided through the Windham Center.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Windham Center for Psychiatric Care publishes little information about its treatment program. However, according to its website, the facility offers a “comprehensive program of inpatient mental health services.”

Behavioral health services are provided in support of primary medical care practices. As such, the facility’s staff works as a part of each client’s primary care provider team and uses a broad approach to facilitate treatments and promote better health.

The Center’s official YellowPages.com listing, supplied by the facility, notes that Windham Center for Psychiatric Care specializes in treating adjustment disorders, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and substance use disorders.

An alum polled by Rehabs.com noted they remained in treatment at the facility for 30 to 60 days. They also reported that during treatment they participated in individual and group counseling. The reviewer declined to rate the facility’s holistic offerings, perhaps indicating that these may not form a strong part of the treatment program.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

On its website, Windham Center for Psychiatric Care currently lists six members of the behavioral health team, including three doctors, nurses, and social workers; there are an additional 10 highly qualified members on the behavioral health staff of Springfield Medical Care Systems.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Windham Center for Psychiatric Care is located in Bellows Falls. The inpatient unit has 10 beds. Although information regarding its accommodations and amenities is limited, the one alum polled on the matter gave the facility a perfect five-star rating for its overall cleanliness and upkeep.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Two alumni to date submitted very positive feedback to Rehabs.com about Windham Center for Psychiatric Care, as reflected in the perfect five stars they both awarded the facility for overall treatment effectiveness. Former client C.B. provided more detailed opinions about other metrics, offering five stars for connectivity/visitor policy, the effectiveness of lead counselors, overall individual and group counseling, safety, and staff support. C.B. appreciate the "great staff and great food,” while the other alum described staff a caring and knowledgeable.

Reviewers on secondary sites also offered positive opinions to date. Two reviewers on Google offered a four- and perfect five-star rating, while two reviewers both awarded perfect five star-ratings on the facility’s unofficial Facebook page. [1] [2] Reviewers praised the staff and the care they received. Neil wrote on Google: “It is a wonderful place the staff is great and help you. I just want to also thank the staff cause I don’t know if I would be alive today. They really helped me through the tough time.”

FINANCING

The Windham Center accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance. The website notes that “individual financial arrangements are also available for those in need” and that assistance is provided for those trying to apply for publicly-funded health insurance. Co-payments are due at the time of service, and a $10 late fee will be assessed for late payments. Fees for missed appointments and returned checks also can be applied at the facility’s discretion. In Vermont, the facility is among the 57.1 percent of facilities to accept Medicare.

CONCLUSION

In August 2014, in an article titled “Psychiatric Center in Trouble for Violating Patient Rights,” the Vermont Digger reported: “In late May a patient at the Windham Center mental health facility was left in restraints for nearly 12 hours and was coerced into taking medication, according to an investigation report from the state… The Windham Center has since submitted a plan of correction to the state Division of Licensing and Protection and the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which was accepted Aug. 19.” Springfield Hospital did not respond to the publication’s requests for comments, and no further update has appeared in the news media.

[1] GoogleReviews

[2] https://www.facebook.com/pages/Windham-Center-for-Psychiatric-Care/120824067933325
