ABOUT NORTH TEXAS STATE HOSPITAL

As its name suggests, North Texas State Hospital is a state-operated mental healthcare facility, one of 41 hospital inpatient facilities in the state. The hospital operates three campuses, which together constitute the largest state mental health hospital in Texas. The two Vernon campus provides forensic services for adults and adolescents who are involved in the criminal justice system. The Wichita Falls location, situated in the southwest of the city near Lake Wichita, provides inpatient treatment for individuals struggling with mental illness, developmental disorders, and co-occurring mental health disorders as well as offering some forensic services. All clients must be referred in the case of non-forensic clients, by their local mental health authority.

Treatment is available for children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Most clients enter the facility on only a short-term basis, though the center can also accommodate some longer-term admissions. Children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 are treated in a dedicated child and adolescent program, with separate accommodations.

The facility provides little information about its treatment specifics, except to note that programming is primarily geared toward stabilizing clients so that they can return to community life or other, more specialized programs. There is a dedicated geriatric program, one of the 92 in the state, that focuses on personal fulfillment and a sense of purpose and dignity, as well as programs focusing on social responsiveness and the safe management of dangerous and maladaptive behaviors. More at-risk clients may be placed in an intermediate security program.

The facility holds a special family day periodically on Saturdays at which clients can visit with families and attend scheduled events including family therapy.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

There is currently no information provided by North Texas State Hospital Wichita Falls regarding its treatment staff, however, the single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility five out of five stars for its staff's level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The Wichita Falls Campus offers 330 beds in total, on a campus that offers plenty of green space. Patients have an opportunity to work on vocational projects on-site, for example, recycling, lawn maintenance, and janitorial programs. Visitors are welcome during specified hours, and the single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility five stars for its cleanliness and exercise and leisure offerings and three stars for its accommodations and meals and nutrition.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date would strongly recommend treatment at North Texas State Hospital Wichita Falls. "Attentive staff, interesting and entertainig things to do during downtime," the anonymous reviewer wrote, adding praise for holistic offerings such as social skills training and vocational and recreational activities. They gave the facility five stars for its treatment effectiveness, family participation, counseling options, and ability to treat co-occurring disorders, and four stars for its holistic offerings.

The facility had a 2.5 out of five star average rating based on 16 reviews left on Google at the time of this writing.[1] "Many poor, homeless and people considered violent come to the state hospital," C.B. wrote, adding that they felt some clients were treated for teaching purposes rather than their own benefit. Other alumni criticized the staff's behavior, which they characterized as rude and unhelpful. "Any horror stories about this place I can believe and should be investigated" wrote alum David.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Staff reviews posted in Indeed.com at the time of this writing were mostly positive: North Texas State Hospital as a whole had a 3.8-star average rating based on 96 reviews.[2] The reviewers repeatedly described the campus as fast-paced and wrote that they learned a lot while working there, while also praising the center's staff and mission. "The mission and vision of this mental health facility is very good. The patients in the facility have good opportunity to get healthy and return to society," one anonymous reviewer wrote in a representative review.

CONCLUSION

This campus is Medicare certified. Only 17.9% of facilities in Texas accept Medicare. There is currently no further information provided on the facility's website regarding its costs, however, the single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the hospital five out of five stars for its affordability.

In 2014, a patient at North Texas State Hospital's Wichita Falls campus died under circumstances that remained mysterious for some time. The Texas Tribune reported that a detective recommended a verdict of accidental death, but in its own separate review, the state set out to establish whether restraints used on the patient were abusive. One psychiatric nursing assistant was fired as a result of that investigation. "Adult Protective Services investigators determined that (the employee) had committed 'Class I Physical Abuse,'" the Texas Tribune reported. The hospital has vigorously denied any wrongdoing, citing the patient's medical vulnerabilities: "James Smith, the superintendent of the North Texas State Hospital, offered a spirited defense of Roy and his colleagues, saying he disagreed with the findings and had doubts about the 'objectivity' of the Adult Protective Services review."

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/North-Texas-State-Hospital/reviews?fcountry=US&floc=Wichita+Falls%2C+TX
