Editorial Review

ABOUT TERRELL STATE HOSPITAL

Terrell State Hospital is a psychiatric inpatient hospital operated under the direction of the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). It's one of only eight facilities in Texas (less than just 2 percent of all facilities in Texas) run by the state. Located 35 miles east of central Dallas, the hospital offers acute and intermediate inpatient care to children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics who are struggling with mental and behavioral health disorders, including substance use disorder.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The center’s mission is to provide “quality, evidence-based psychiatric care in a safe and compassionate environment,” free of restraint and seclusions.

Treatment begins with an initial assessment conducted by a psychiatrist and a physical exam conducted by a medical doctor. New clients also receive evaluations from nurses, social services, pastoral caregivers, and sometimes, psychologists who perform specialized testing.

The center publishes minimal information about its treatment programs, but Rehabs.com reviews indicate that the program uses individual and group counseling, and does not have a strong focus on exercise, leisure, or holistic options. The center’s website also notes that clients’ families are encouraged to participate in treatment, and that the center works to recognize the effects of trauma on an individual’s mental and behavioral health.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Staff includes psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and pastors. The two individuals polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the staff's level of training and experience low ratings of one and two out of five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

This is a 288-bed facility on a large, grass-filled campus, with a chapel on-site. The facility is tobacco-free. The two individuals surveyed by Rehabs.com to date gave low ratings of one or two out of five stars for its accommodations and its cleanliness.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

L.K.H., the sole alum polled by Rehabs.com to date, gave Terrell State Hospital negative feedback. The 18-to-25-year-old, who was court-ordered to attend treatment, awarded the facility just one out of five stars for its staff support, its holistic offerings, the consistency and frequency of its meetings, and the overall quality of its counseling. "It was a horrible setting," they wrote.

The facility earned average ratings of 3.1 out of five stars based on 25 Google reviews[1] and 3.6 out of five stars based on 48 Facebook reviews[2]. The majority of former clients who left comments about the facility described it as a rough environment with next to no amenities. "My experience was not pleasant," Jenny wrote in a representative review.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The one loved one surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing, an anonymous 40-to-59-year old male, gave Terrell State Hospital mostly negative feedback. He awarded the facility one or two out of five stars for its connectivity, its family participation, its counseling options, and its treatment of co-occurring disorders. "it is a state facility and is state operated and the state needs to get out of the business," they wrote.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Terrell State Hospital earned mixed feedback from staff on secondary sites, receiving average ratings of 3.5 out of five stars based on 13 Glassdoor reviews[3] and 2.6 out of five stars based on 60 Indeed reviews[4]. While many reviewers praised the center’s mission and their coworkers, and claimed that they received good benefits, an equal amount noted that they sometimes faced aggression and threats to their physical safety from clients. "You always have to be aware of your surroundings," wrote one anonymous reviewer.

FINANCING

Terrell State Hospital takes Medicare, which is accepted by 18 percent of all facilities in Texas. As a state facility, it is also intended to treat the uninsured.

CONCLUSION

In May 2016, Dallas News reported on the state of disrepair of many of Texas’s state psychiatric facilities, including Terrell State Hospital. The article noted that the state’s psychiatric units need up to $1 billion of investment, and cited problems at Terrell including dangerous door and wall fixtures that pose a suicide risk, as well as a mold problem. The article includes quotes from officers at Terrell State Hospital confirming the disrepair.

In March 2018, the Statesman reported that a former employee had filed a lawsuit against Terrell State Hospital alleging that he witnessed co-workers abusing patients, and was then fired when he reported the abuse.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pages/Terrell-State-Hospital/116052131753139
[3] https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Terrell-State-Hospital-Reviews-E120955.htm
[4] https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Terrell-State-Hospital-Reviews-E120955.htm
