<p><strong>ABOUT THE TEXAS HOUSE</strong></p> <p>Located in Houston, <strong>The Texas House is a long-term, residential program designed for indigent men struggling with chemical dependency</strong> or <a href="http://www.recovery.org/topics/dual-diagnosis-recovery/" target="_blank">co-occurring disorders</a>. The four-phased, peer-driven treatment program adheres to a therapeutic community model of treatment. Along with evidence-based treatment methods, The Texas House also implements a work-therapy phase of treatment. <strong>On-site detoxification is not available</strong>.</p> <p><strong>TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT</strong></p> <p>Within 72 hours of admission, clients undergo an initial medical screening and comprehensive assessment to evaluate individual strengths and weaknesses and develop a personalized treatment plan. <strong>The Texas House’s year-long treatment program consists of four phases: Orientation, Primary, Transition, and Work.</strong></p> <p>During the Orientation phase (usually around 14 days), clients become acclimated to the rules of the therapeutic community. <strong>Clients are also introduced to the 12-Steps, and on-site meetings are held daily</strong>. During the Primary phase (30 to 90 days), clients continue to participate in 12-Step, attend peer-led counseling groups, and meet with their primary counselor. The Texas House also offers an <strong>educational Family Living Skills Program</strong> for loved ones.</p> <p>Clients begin to integrate back into society during the <strong>Transition phase, which usually lasts four to seven months</strong>. Residents attend off-site 12-step meetings, work with a sponsor, and begin to build their community-based support network. Once a client successfully completes steps four and five of out of the 12, they transition into the Work phase.</p> <p>During the Work phase, <strong>clients must obtain employment</strong> while continuing to stay active in the 12-Steps and attending mandatory meetings. Clients in this phase also serve as role models and mentors to new clients. </p> <p><strong>STAFF CREDENTIALS</strong></p> <p>The Texas House is run by a team of licensed chemical dependency counselors (LCDC). Three out of four individuals polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing offered five out of five stars for the treatment staff’s level of experience and training. One survey respondent did not provide a rating for this metric.</p> <p><strong>ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES</strong></p> <p>The Texas House is similar to an apartment complex and features group meeting rooms, <strong>shared bedrooms</strong>, a dining hall, well-furnished communal rooms, and a central courtyard area with picnic tables and a patio. The four individuals polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing offered an average rating of 4.25 out of five stars for the facility’s cleanliness, as well as 2.75 stars for its exercise and leisure activities.</p> <p>According to its website, the Texas House is in the process of expanding its campus to include a <a href="http://www.texas-house.org/facility-expansion-plans.html" target="_blank">transitional living facility</a> with private rooms for men who have graduated the program. </p> <p><strong>WHAT ALUMNI SAY</strong></p> <p>The three former residents surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing felt the program was <strong>highly beneficial</strong>, offering five out of five stars for the facility’s overall effectiveness. One anonymous alum gave the facility four stars for accommodations & amenities and five stars for meals & nutrition. The alum was neutral when polled about whether the facility was adequately equipped and staffed to treat co-occurring mental health problems in addition to substance use disorders. </p> <p>Alum J.H. also felt the counseling options were limited, giving this only two stars. He gave two stars to the accommodations and the facility's cleanliness as well. J.H. offered a rating of just one star for the facility’s cell phone and visitation policy. However, on the positive side, J.H. commented that the facility did an adequate job of allowing families to be involved in treatment, and gave four stars for the facility’s family participation policy. Additionally, he wrote, “Changed my life! I recommend it all the time.”</p> <p>In contras to the first two opinions, the third alum polled by Rehabs.com listed counselors as the facility's strength, and wrote, "Real recovery is taught from excellent counselors."</p> <p>Feedback on Google at the time of this writing was <strong>highly positive</strong>.<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-1"><sup>[1]</sup></a></small> Earning 4.8 stars, the facility received no negative feedback from its eight reviewers. One of the six five-star reviewers did comment, "Awesome caring people!"</p> <p><strong>WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY</strong></p> <p>To date, the sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com, G.M., praised many aspects of treatment, and offered <strong>five out of five stars for the level of family participation, the facility’s meals, and the experience level of the staff</strong>. “It's a family type atmosphere. It was helpful for my love one,” she wrote. G.M. was also very satisfied with the facility’s level of care.
