Editorial Review

ABOUT THE DAPA WAY — NATIONAL DUAL DIAGNOSIS SPECIALISTS

In operation for more than three decades, DAPA, “Houston’s largest private mental health care provider,” offers short-term inpatient stabilization services, including medical detoxification and outpatient care at various levels of intensity. Programming here is designed for under-served individuals and populations needing access to effective dual diagnosis care.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The Acute Inpatient Program (AIP) begins with various psychiatric and psychosocial assessments. With programming lasting five to 20 days, this short-term track offers detoxification, as well as treatment for major depression with suicidal thoughts, bipolar disorders, schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and other mental health crises. Over the course of their short stay, clients are provided multiple group therapy sessions daily, individual therapy “as needed,” and medications, where appropriate.

Similarly beginning with an evaluation to determine a prospective client’s specific needs (which involves a telephone or in-person interview), DAPA’s partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs prioritize providing integrated treatment to address substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders.

In the first stage of IOP or PHP, clients remain in a transitional unit for two to four weeks, where they take part in five groups daily, and have their medication checked by the psychiatrist bi-weekly. When considered “ready” by staff, adults and seniors alike move into age-specific programs complete with men’s and women’s groups, groups focused on various co-occurring disorders, and groups that address issues often accompanying addiction, such as family conflict, relationship matters, and pain and anger management.

Available directly or as a step-down option, DAPA’s afternoon outpatient clinic provides psychiatric assessments and medication monitoring. All clients are equipped with long-term aftercare plans prior to their departure.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to DAPAs website, staff includes psychiatrists, internal medicine physicians, physician assistants, advanced nurse practitioners, and certified counselors and therapists.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by DAPA regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, but the seven alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date gave average ratings of 3.58 stars out of five for the facility’s accommodations and 3.71 stars for its cleanliness.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Seven alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date highly recommended DAPA, with an average 4.67 out of five stars. Affordability received the highest rating at 4.5 stars followed by staff's level of training and experience at 4.33 stars. In comments, alumni praised the staff as "effective". Collectively, alumni rated the facility lowest in holistic treatment offerings at an average rating of 1.83 stars for connectivity and 2.5 stars for the facility's visitor policy.

Google reviews presented a more mixed picture, with six reviewers rating the facility an average 2.7 out of five stars, including three one-star, two four-star, and one five-star reviews.[1] Alum R.K. gave four stars and wrote: “Was given housing, meals, psychotherapy and pharmacutical therapy. Its drug rehab, you make of it what you can.” But in a one-star review, an anonymous reviewer reported a staff “rude and completely void of compassion.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

On Indeed, one current and one former employee rated DAPA four and five out of five stars, respectively.[2] A current assistant manager wrote: “Wonderful place to work when entering the field of dual diagnosis."A former medical assistant called DAPA a “Great place to work, treat you like family,” and added, “Most enjoyable part of the job was helping people get their life back on track so they can return to their family.”

FINANCING

The inpatient program accepts almost all major insurances, but both PHP and IOP tracks require that clients have Medicare A or B.
