Services & Treatment

Editorial Review

ABOUT SANTA MARIA’S BONITA HOUSE

Since the mid 1950's, Santa Maria has offered services to adult women and their children in the Houston area. Today, it provides assistance for homelessness, physical health challenges, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Bonita House, one of three facilities operated by Santa Maria, provides residential and outpatient treatment for women, including detox services on-site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment at Santa Maria's Bonita House starts with an admissions assessment to determine the most appropriate course of care. If needed, clients may enter a medically supervised residential detox program, which is monitored 24/7. Following detox, clients are encouraged to transition into one of the organization’s two residential treatment programs.

Women in intensive residential treatment can bring their children with them, who attend daycare or school while clients undergo treatment activities. Pregnant women are allowed to participate. Clients attend 30 hours of programming per week, which is evidence-based and trauma-informed. The curriculum includes parenting education, life skills workshops, addiction education programming, relapse prevention, anger management classes, and women-specific groups.

Supportive residential treatment is a 30-day trauma-informed offering. Clients attend 10 hours of programming per week and have the opportunity to seek employment and attend outside support groups while living in a safe, structured environment. Services include individual and group counseling, case management, life skills education, family education, relapse prevention skills, parenting classes and coaching, and career development assistance.

Outpatient treatment can serve as a standalone service or step-down option from residential treatment and has a strong emphasis on relapse prevention. Treatment is available in the day or evening and includes post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) counseling, peer recovery support, individual and group therapy, family education, 12-step meetings, and other process groups. To make it easier for clients to attend outpatient therapy, the facility provides free bus tokens for clients, as well as snacks and childcare for children.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Santa Maria's Bonita House treatment team includes social workers, licensed chemical dependency counselors, certified medical assistants, counselors, and other behavioral health professionals.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Santa Maria's Bonita House is a large brick complex with attractive shrubbery and on-site parking. No information is provided on the facility's website or elsewhere about accommodations and amenities, except that women can live with their children and daycare is provided for children.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At time of writing, Rehabs.com polled one alum about their experience at Santa Maria’s Bonita House. The review was largely positive. This former client awarded perfect five stars for treatment effectiveness and accommodations and amenities. They rated a number of other metrics four out of five stars, including meals and nutrition, family participation, affordability, the staff's level of training and experience, treatment of co-occurring disorders, exercise and leisure activities, cleanliness, and the likelihood to recommend the facility to others. This alum wanted Rehabs.com to know that Bonita House is a “good facility” with "n,a." weaknesses.

On its official Facebook page, which the facility can manage, Santa Maria as a whole earned 4.6 out of five stars from 41 reviews to date.[1] Of note, more than 85 percent of the reviews were the top five stars for all facilities, not Bonita House specifically. Many alumni praised the staff and effectiveness of treatment, which helped turn their life around, such as five-star reviewer Bethany, who wrote: “Santa Maria changed my life! I would recommend it any woman suffering from addiction” and added: “I know if Santa Maria help me turn my life around a they can help anyone!!” In another representative review, alum Chantella wrote: "This is an awesome place for recovery. The counselors really dedicate themselves in helping you to find the real you and instill in you coping skills to live a productive life l. I'm truly thankful and grateful to Santa Maria for showing me how to live."

FINANCING

Santa Maria provides treatment to low income and uninsured women. It is unclear what other payment options are accepted.
[1] https://www.facebook.com/pg/SantaMariaHostel/reviews/
