ABOUT SANTA MARIA HOSTEL

Santa Maria Hostel offers residential and outpatient treatment programs for individuals struggling with substance abuse. Their aim is to provide support to low-income pregnant and parenting women and their children in Houston and surrounding counties. The nonprofit organization began offering alcohol and drug addiction recovery services in 1950 and accepts clients through the criminal justice system, those with Child Protective Services challenges, and those struggle with co-occurring mental health disorders. Medically-supervised detox is available on site.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Santa Maria Hostel is part of the 48 percent of facilities in the state to offer programs specifically for women that are tailored to different situations and needs. Residents may participate in an intensive or supportive treatment program, both of which incorporate education and therapies that are trauma-informed, family-centered, evidence-based, and culturally sensitive. Each program includes opportunities to develop life skills, including participating in GED services, while receiving group and individual counseling and ongoing treatments for co-occurring psychiatric disorders.

Santa Maria is part of the 8.4 percent of treatment facilities in Texas to offer residential detox programs. In this program patients are monitored 24/7 by a medical team until they achieve stability. Women are encouraged to transition into residential treatment following detox.

The intensive residential program focuses on stabilization and gaining knowledge on addiction. Thirty hours of classes each week cover parenting and relationships, life skills, relapse prevention, and addiction education. The 30-day supportive residential program requires a minimum of 10 hours of group meetings per work, focusing on relapse prevention and life skills while clients seek employment and housing.

Women may also choose to participate in outpatient treatment that incorporates 12-step participation, either as a primary or step-down program. Additional therapies and classes offered at the hostel include family education, fitness and nutrition, parenting classes, anger management, trauma-focused groups, case management, and career development.

Recovery coaches are available to maintain weekly contact with clients and provide referrals as well as respond to recovery challenges. A 180-day program called Women Helping Ourselves is available to pregnant and parenting women as an alternative to incarceration with a referral from the corrections system.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The facility’s team includes a licensed master social worker, medical doctors, licensed chemical dependency counselors, trained recovery coaches, and several staff members in long-term recovery, including one woman who was one of the first graduates of the Santa Maria Hostel rehabilitation program.

The facility's detox program is supervised 24/7 by nurses and two physicians from nearby Baylor College of Medicine.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

According to the organization's website, women with children stay at Santa Maria Hostel’s Bonita House and single women at Jacquelyn House.
