ABOUT COVENANT HOUSE TEXAS

Located in the Montrose neighborhood of southwest Houston, Covenant House Texas (CHT) offers a crisis center, counseling and developmental services, and transitional living facilities for homeless and runaway young men and women aged 18 to 24. It's one of the 25.8 percent of rehabs in Texas that offer dedicated programming for young adults.

Founded in 1983, the center is a part of Covenant House, a nonprofit, faith-based, nondenominational network of 31 homeless shelters for young people across North and Central America. As such, CHT is one of the 43.4 percent of Texas-based rehabs that operate as private nonprofits.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

CHT offers three levels of residential care, beginning with a drop-in center that also serves as the intake office. Here, homeless youth can access meals, laundry, clothing, showers, and healthcare services, as well as enter into longer-term residential care, if they wish. No youth is turned away from the drop-in center. The on-site health clinic (available to all clients) provides substance use assessments and drug education and awareness services, alongside other health provisions.

Those who choose to enter for a residential stay are housed at a crisis shelter, which provides the same services as the drop-in center, with the addition of a safe place to stay and the opportunity to work with a case manager to create a plan for recovery. Parenting young adults are welcome at the crisis center, and may bring children up to the age of five to stay with them (making the center one of the 2.1 percent of facilities in the State of Texas that offer beds for residents' children).

The longest-term level of care is Rites of Passage (ROP), a transitional living unit where youth may stay for up to two years. At ROP, residents live independently but are supported as they acquire life skills, such as budgeting and finding and maintaining employment. All ROP clients work, study, or attend vocational training, and they're encouraged to save a portion of their paychecks toward getting an apartment of their own.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The clinic at CHT is staffed by a doctor and nurses from a local teaching hospital. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility four out of five stars for its staff's level of training and experience.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

On average, 45 young men and women sleep at the crisis shelter each night, with rooms for four located on gender-separate wings. Three balanced meals are provided daily; lunch can be packed to go for those residents who need to be elsewhere during the daytime. On the longer-term programs, residents live independently with supervision from facility staff. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility five out of five stars for its cleanliness, four stars for its exercise and leisure offerings, and three stars for its accommodations and meals and nutrition.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews directly from alumni of this facility, and secondary sites yield 66 reviews, all left on Google, which give an average rating of 3.8 stars.[1] The reviews are polarized: negative reviewers repeatedly cite dirty conditions, including cockroaches and other bugs, as well as poor, condescending treatment from staff and favoritism; and a sense that people had been thrown out of the program unjustly. "The covenant house has staff that have favorites and they are NOT permitted to follow the rules. I was just put out of the cov because they said I 'don't like' the rules when most kids break them," Kitty wrote in a representative review.

But numerous reviewers reported that they had found a safe haven at Covenant House, repeatedly noting that the center is successful for those residents who follow orders. "I stayed here for about 5 months. There's lots of room in certain programs and the staff does really care... Just do as your instructed and you will get what you need out of Covenant House," Timothy wrote in a representative review.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date would strongly recommend treatment at Covenant House. "The treatment was effective and was primarily responsible for getting life in order," they wrote anonymously, giving the facility five stars for its family participation, counseling options, and ability to treat co-occurring disorders, but just two stars for its holistic offerings.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Covenant House Texas has mixed feedback from staff at the time of this writing, with a 3.8 out of five-star average rating based on four reviews on Indeed and a 1.5 out of five-star average rating based on four reviews on Glassdoor.[1] [2] The positive reviewers invariably praised the center's dedication to its mission. "Really cares about the population it serves," one such reviewer wrote on Glassdoor.

However, there were also repeated complaints of cultural insensitivity toward certain demographics, as well as low staff morale and excessively heavy workloads. "Advice to Management Incorporate cultural sensitive training. Be clear about the vision and mission," one reviewer wrote in a representative comment on Glassdoor.

FINANCING

Covenant House Texas receives funding from the City of Houston, donations, grants, fundraising, and the Covenant House network. The crisis center is open free of charge to short-term residents, but those on the longer-term transitional living program pay a portion of their earnings toward rent. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the facility three out of five stars for its affordability.

CONCLUSION

For the last seven years, for a night in November, dozens of Houston-area executives have slept outside of the Covenant House to raise money and awareness to the continuing need to help teens who are homeless in the community.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Covenant-House-Texas/reviews
[3] https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Covenant-House-Texas-Reviews-E1714443.htm
