<p><strong>ABOUT BEN TAUB HOSPITAL/HARRIS HEALTH SYSTEM</strong></p> <p>Ben Taub Hospital/Harris Health System, located in Houston, Texas, offers both <strong>inpatient and outpatient psychiatric treatment to children, adolescents, and adults</strong> seeking treatment for mental illness and <a href="https://www.recovery.org/topics/dual-diagnosis-recovery/" target="_blank">co-occurring substance abuse disorders</a>. The facility is part of the larger Baylor College of Medicine health system. Detox is not available. </p> <p><strong>TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT</strong></p> <p>The psychiatric <strong>residential unit is a 20-bed unit</strong>, providing around-the-clock care for individuals facing mental health concerns. The facility is capable of providing care to homeless individuals with medical and psychiatric conditions that make them ineligible for services at the nearby Harris County Psychiatric Center. </p> <p>Treatment includes goals groups, educational groups, and <strong>daily living groups along with neuropsychological testing</strong>, as needed. With a goal of stabilization, the average length of stay is <strong>eight days</strong> making it one of Texas’ <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/TX16.pdf" target="_blank">39 short-term, hospital-based treatment facilities</a>. <strong>Pharmacological intervention</strong> may also be utilized to promote stabilization.</p> <p>The Psychiatric Emergency Center (EC) is a service for those in need of <strong>stabilization from a mental health crisis</strong>. The Center provides evaluations to determine each clients’ needs and must be completed within 23 hours of admittance. If chemical dependency issues are present, an on-site licensed chemical dependency counselor will participate in determining the treatment plan.</p> <p>The adult psychiatric consultation/liaison services are available for clients facing psychiatric and substance abuse concerns while admitted to the acute medical and surgical units of the hospital. The facility also specializes in child psychiatric care seeing about <strong>40 children per month</strong> with psychiatric and other pediatric conditions. The facility is among the <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/TX17.pdf" target="_blank">26.7 percent of Texas facilities</a> to provide specialized programming for adolescents.</p> <p>The Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic primarily sees patients who have <strong>co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders</strong> and have been unable to access care at another facility. <strong>Medication management</strong> is offered through the outpatient clinic and social workers conduct <strong>process groups, therapy groups, and provide case management</strong>. </p> <p>The Community Behavioral Health Program is a program staffed by a mental health treatment team at various locations throughout the Houston Community. The goal is to get patients involved with behavioral care early and stabilize them within the community. Medical services are also incorporated.</p> <p>The <strong>intensive outpatient program (IOP)</strong> is intended for individuals dealing with life issues too severe for independent living but not so severe that they require inpatient treatment. With an average length of <strong>two months</strong>, IOP includes <strong>individual and group therapy</strong>, medication management, and case management. A chemical dependency program is incorporated into the treatment, however, <strong>30 days of sobriety</strong> must be achieved prior to admission.</p> <p>Finally, the organization operates a Mood Disorder Clinic, a Survivors of Torture Clinic, and various other psychotherapy groups that are open to all.</p> <p><strong>STAFF CREDENTIALS</strong></p> <p>The facility's treatment team includes psychiatrists, psychotherapists, substance abuse counselors, social workers, licensed chemical dependency counselors, and other medical support staff. The facility is accredited by SACSCOC, which only accredits organizations in 11 southern U.S. states. </p> <p><strong>ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES</strong></p> <p>The facility offers <strong>20 beds</strong> for male and female adult clients in a hospital-like setting for residential treatment. In terms of size, it is one of the <a href="https://www.samhsa.gov/data/sites/default/files/2016_NSSATS.pdf" target="_blank">2,167 U.S. facilities with fewer than 29 beds</a>. The facility is clinical, and <strong>clients often share rooms</strong>. Clients have access to medical facilities and personnel at all times during their stay. </p> <p><strong>WHAT ALUMNI SAY</strong> </p> <p>On the facility’s unofficial Facebook page, the facility has an average rating of <strong>3.8 out of five stars based on 1,669 reviews</strong>.<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-1"><sup>[1]</sup></a></small> The reviews, however, are regarding the hospital as a whole, not just the behavioral health services. Several reviewers who gave one out of five star ratings had concerns regarding the attentiveness of the staff, the cleanliness of the facility, and the effectiveness of the treatment they received. On the positive side, those who gave five star ratings shared positive feedback about the attentiveness of the staff and the compassionate service they received. Overall, the reviews were very mixed. </p> <p>On the facility’s Google page, there is an average rating of <strong>three out of five stars</strong> based on 423 total reviews.<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-2"><sup>[2]</sup></a></small> These reviews are also regarding the hospital as a whole, not just the behavioral health services. The feedback was similar to the Facebook reviews. Those who gave only one star wrote negatively of the care they received from the staff and the length of time they had to wait for services. However, those who left five star reviews felt that they received excellent care from the staff and many were impressed that the wait time was not as long as they expected it to be. </p> <p><strong>WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY</strong> </p> <p>At the time of this writing, there has been one anonymous friend of a former client polled by Rehabs.com. The client was treated for a dual diagnosis of mental illness and substance abuse.The anonymous friend gave the facility four out of five stars for treatment effectiveness and indicated that her friend improved her self-awareness and life skills and became willing to take prescribed medicine. Overall, the friend agreed that she would recommend the facility.
