Editorial Review

ABOUT SOUTH TEXAS BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CENTER

For more than two decades, South Texas Behavioral Health Center has helped patients suffering with chemical dependency, substance abuse, and other behavioral health disorders. Located in Edinburg, Texas, the private, inpatient facility has 134 beds for patients in four age groups: child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. Intensive outpatient treatment is also available.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment is individualized and multidisciplinary, designed to treat both crisis and ongoing health concerns. Distinct, age-based programs focus on behavioral health challenges that are particularly prominent in successive stages of life. Education, coping skills, and planning for aftercare and recovery maintenance are prioritized in each program.

Comprehensive medical care is available for adult and teenaged patients who have received a dual diagnosis of depression and chemical dependency, as well as detoxification services for adults. Patients suffering with symptoms such as self-mutilation tendencies and severe mood swings participate in an array of therapies including recreation, psychiatric counseling, medication management, and anger management.

An intensive outpatient program for patients 18 years of age and over meets Monday through Friday mornings and focuses mainly on depression and anxiety. Transportation assistance and placement assessment are available.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Each patient receives treatment from a team that includes psychiatrists, physicians, nurses, therapists, and other behavioral health professionals. Staff credentials represented on the facility’s website include board certification in clinical psychopharmacology, diplomat status with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, American Psychiatric Association membership, and medical training in New York, Galveston, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and at Children’s Hospital in Boston.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

On the 134-bed facility’s website, photographs of the center’s meeting and therapy areas feature bright spaces with large windows, outdoor play areas, shared bedrooms, an indoor gym with a basketball court, and secured premises.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s alumni; however, 28 reviews from a mix of friends, family, and alumni left on secondary reviews sites revealed generally negative opinions regarding staff, accommodations, organization, and communication. The reviewers rated the facility 2.2 out of five stars. Comments in one Google review from alum O.G. described the staff as “rude” and said that “they dont listen.”[1] Multiple alumni reviews on Google and CiteHealth mentioned the facility’s wait times for service.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

A loved one polled by Rehabs.com commented: “The professionals at the facility were helpful in understanding patient’s needs.” The respondent gave four-star ratings for family participation and accommodations and three out of five stars for treatment effectiveness.

Feedback from loved ones posted on secondary review sites was critical of communications from the facility about the availability and extent of assistance. An anonymous parent whose son had been discharged from the health center wrote: “Today my son went into a crisis again and I couldn’t get anybody [to] help us.” He described conflicting communications received from the facility and concluded: “My question or my point is why was he discharged to soon if he needed more treatment.”[2]

Two reviews from loved ones referenced more positive experiences. On Google, parent D.R. wrote: “Very attentive Registration,, to my daughter,” and an anonymous reviewer on CiteHealth described staff as “great” and “really caring.”

FINANCING

The South Texas Behavioral Health Center accepts payment from most major insurance companies.

[1] https://goo.gl/gDyCEG
[2] http://citehealth.com/rehab-centers/texas/cities/edinburg/south-texas-behavioral-health-center#reviews
