ABOUT VA NORTH TEXAS HEALTHCARE SYSTEM - SAM RAYBURN MEMORIAL VETERANS CENTER

The Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center, operated by the VA North Texas Health Care System, offers residential treatment services in Bonham, Texas, about 90 minutes north of Dallas. Among its various services and departments, the VA center runs a 202-bed Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (RRTP) designed for veterans struggling with substance abuse disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and co-occurring disorders.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, clients participate in an initial assessment to help clinicians develop an individualized treatment program. Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center offers three residential tracks in the domiciliary program: general, substance use disorder (SUD), and PTSD.

According to the VA’s website, the facility's SUD programming blends evidence-based practices with 12-step facilitation. During residential care, clients may attend 12-step meetings, participate in workshops on "step-work," and study fellowship literature. Along with 12-Step, clients attend individual and group psychotherapy to improve mindfulness and help cognitive restructuring. Clients may also attend educational classes on relapse prevention and trigger avoidance. Family counseling may also be incorporated into treatment to involve loved ones in the recovery process.

Clients struggling with PTSD may participate in trauma-informed counseling sessions and attend workshops on coping strategies, relaxation techniques, and emotional regulation. Additional treatment may include ongoing medication management, routine physical exams, and recovery time at the community living center. PTSD referrals do not need to be combat-related for clients to enroll into the PTSD residential program at Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The VA North Texas Health Care System is led by a chief of staff who is a medical doctor and a board-certified nurse executive. Other staff members may include licensed counselors, nurses, social workers, case managers, and peer specialists.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The 202-bed residential unit houses veterans in rooms with shared bathrooms, closet space, and dressers. In a separate, secured area, the VA center allocates 12 beds for females. Upon their entry, all veterans receive fresh towels and linens. Meals are shared in the center’s dining hall, and WiFi spots are available, as are bicycles, with prior medical approval. No smoking is allowed. Religious services are held in the on-site chapel on Sundays.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The three alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing all gave positive reviews of the facility.
