ABOUT AUSTIN LAKES HOSPITAL

Austin Lakes Hospital is a mental health treatment center offering psychiatric services for adults. In addition to two intensive psychiatric inpatient units, this Texas-based facility provides a dual diagnosis program for individuals with co-occurring addiction and mental health disorders, as well as two outpatient-based programs: a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and intensive outpatient programs (IOPs).

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon intake, all patients receive an on-site, pre-admission screening to determine an appropriate level of care. Psychiatric Intensive Care is the highest level of 24/7 care, focusing mainly on crisis intervention and stabilization.

Inpatient care provides 24-hour supervision and therapeutic treatment, including cognitive therapy, anxiety and depression education, spiritual care, and workshops on topics such as coping skills, problem solving, and stress management.

Medication management is also included during inpatient care. In addition, patients participate in experiential activities such as pet therapy and therapeutic recreation groups. There is a separate program for patients aged 55 and older.

Acute Dual Diagnosis Program helps clients struggling with substance abuse and primary psychiatric conditions. Treatment addresses all aspects of addiction, along with psychiatric interventions, individual counseling, group therapy, and psychoeducation on chemical dependency.

PHP and IOP typically serve as a step-down continuum of care from inpatient care. The PHP meets from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. five days a week. In addition to an IOP, held three days per week for three hours each, there are specialized IOPs focused on trauma and dialectical behavior therapy.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Austin Lakes Hospital, accredited by the Joint Commission, has a multidisciplinary treatment team that includes three medical directors -- one of whom is a Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist -- licensed social workers, registered nurses, and licensed mental health professionals.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Images on the center's website revealed a standard hospital setting with simple, no-frills bedrooms and comfortable, but clinical, group rooms and common spaces.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two former patients polled by Rehabs.com to date gave Austin Lakes Hospital mixed reviews. Out of five stars, one alum gave four-star ratings for the facility's counseling options, discharge planning, and the staff's level of experience and training. However, the alum did write: "Not enough one on one councilling."

The other alum polled by Rehabs.com, Anna, was more critical of the facility, giving one-star ratings for the facility's ability to treat co-occurring disorders, its counseling options, the amount of family participation, and the staff's level of experience and training. As a visually-impaired patient, Anna felt the facility lacked adequate resources to treat them, as well as reported feeling unsafe.

On secondary review sites to date, the hospital, as a whole, received negative feedback: 1.8 out of five stars based on 36 reviews on Google reviews, 1.5 out of five stars based on 14 recommended reviews on Yelp, and 2.3 stars based on seven reviews that are not recommended on Yelp. [1][2][3] Although several reviewers commended the care rendered, most posted critical comments, characterizing the experience as “awful” or “horrible,” the staff as unkind and unprofessional, and the physical facility as dirty and depressing.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole loved one surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the hospital a largely positive review, offering a perfect five-star rating for the level of staff experience and training, as well as four-star ratings for the facility's ability to treat co-occurring disorders and the likelihood they would recommend the facility to others. “Accessible, caring, adaptive,” they wrote, but added: “External communications to friends / family could be improved.”

FINANCING

According to Austin Lakes Hospital’s website, the facility accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and most major insurance plans.

[1] https://goo.gl/5haCoJ

[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/austin-lakes-hospital-austin

[3] https://www.yelp.com/notrecommendedreviews/Austin-lakes-hospital-austin
