<p><strong>ABOUT VA TENNESSEE VALLEY HEALTHCARE SYSTEM — NASHVILLE</strong></p> <p>The Nashville location of VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) provides <strong>outpatient-based treatment for veterans struggling with substance use disorder</strong>, as well as inpatient and outpatient programs for individuals with a primary or <a href="https://www.recovery.org/topics/dual-diagnosis-recovery/" target="_blank">dually diagnosed</a> psychiatric disorder</p> <p>TVHS addiction treatment services (ATS) are also available at two Murfreesboro clinics, including the <a href="https://www.rehabs.com/listings/tennessee-valley-healthcare-system-alvin-c-york-murfreesboro-campus-3795689552/" target="_blank">Alvin C. York campus</a>, which provides ambulatory detoxification and a Suboxone maintenance program for individuals recovering from opiate addiction. Tennessee’s ATS facilities are among the <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/TN17.pdf" target="_blank">12.9 percent</a> of addiction treatment facilities statewide to provide specialized treatment for veterans.</p> <p><strong>TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT</strong></p> <p>Appointments are required to begin Addiction Treatment Services at the Nashville campus of VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System. Veterans undergo initial substance use and/or mental health assessments to determine an appropriate level of care. </p> <p>Two levels of outpatient care are available for individuals struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. The intensive outpatient program <strong>(IOP) involves four weekly sessions running between six and 10 weeks</strong>. Standard outpatient programming meets once weekly, according to the Tennessee Valley VA website.</p> <p>Veterans receive <strong>individual and group counseling</strong>. When appropriate, the VA encourages loved ones to participate in educational and <a href="https://www.recovery.org/pro/articles/family-addiction-transformation-and-healing-are-possible/" target="_blank">family counseling sessions</a>. Treatment also typically includes relapse prevention workshops, drug education, and peer support services. The Tennessee Valley VA offers program alumni an <a href="https://www.recovery.org/topics/extended-recovery-programs/" target="_blank">aftercare program</a> for up to 12 months.</p> <p><strong>STAFF CREDENTIALS</strong></p> <p>Among the treatment staff members at Nashville’s VA are nurses, physicians, and clinical psychology interns, according to the TVHS website. The three loved ones polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing rated the staff’s level of training and experience two, three, and four out of five stars.</p> <p><strong>WHAT ALUMNI SAY</strong></p> <p>Although Rehabs.com has yet to receive feedback from former clients for the Nashville clinic of VA Tennessee Valley Healthcare System, secondary sources revealed a <strong>mostly positive alumni perspectives</strong>. On Google, 190 individuals contributed to a rating of 4.2 out of five stars; a 4.5 out of five-star average on Yelp based on eight reviews; and Facebook posted 3.6 out of five stars for the overall VA TVHS, based on 289 opinions.<small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-1"><sup>[1]</sup></a></small> <small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-2"><sup>[2]</sup></a></small> <small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-3"><sup>[3]</sup></a></small> Reviews were from a mix of former clients and loved ones, and mostly for general medical services, with few explicit references to substance abuse treatment.</p> <p>A minority of alumni characterized VA TVHS as inefficient and its staff as inattentive or unhelpful; however most reviewers reported that doctors and other medical staff listened to them and were <strong>respectful and professional</strong>. Both positive and critical reviewers cited <strong>understaffing and extensive wait times</strong> for service as weaknesses. Alumni and loved ones also shared concerns about internal communication, resulting in what one reviewer described on Facebook as “very poor continuity of care.” </p> <p><strong>Multiple reviewers also noted changes in the system for the better.</strong> “The Mental Health system has been very lacking in the past, but I sincerely believe they are trying to improve,” wrote one individual in a representative review on Facebook. Additional repeated comments highlighted the facility’s cleanliness and staff’s caring approach.</p> <p><strong>WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY</strong></p> <p>Feedback from the three loved ones polled to date by Rehabs.com was mediocre for VA TVHS. Asked to rate their likelihood to recommend the facility, on a scale of one to five, two choose three and the third chose two stars.</p> <p>Metrics measuring the facility’s affordability and cleanliness and upkeep received the highest ratings among 15 aspects evaluated — mostly four and five stars. Two identified the program’s no-cost treatment for veterans as its strength. Ratings indicated that loved ones found the program inflexible, based on two or three stars apiece for <a href="https://www.recovery.org/forums/discussion/7265/what-is-holistic-treatment-and-how-can-it-help" target="_blank">holistic offerings</a>, counseling options, and co-occurring treatment. Two reviewers reported inadequate follow-up services.</p> <p><strong>WHAT STAFF SAY</strong></p> <p>Former and current employees offered more favorable feedback, as reflected in seven Indeed reviews for the Nashville facility.
