ABOUT MEMPHIS VA MEDICAL CENTER

The Memphis VA Medical Center serves almost 200,000 veterans in a 53-county area of western Tennessee, northern Mississippi, and northwest Arkansas. The network's main hospital, located in the Medical District of central Memphis, provides a wide range of medical and mental health services for veterans. For veterans struggling with addiction, the center provides residential and outpatient treatment, and CiteHealth reports that the facility also offers detoxification services.

The hospital is one of four federal government facilities in the state of Tennessee that offer rehab services, and one of the 12.9 percent of rehabs in the state that offer dedicated programming for veterans.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

All clients receive a comprehensive evaluation prior to admission to determine the appropriate course of care. According to CiteHealth, the facility offers outpatient programs, an inpatient program, and a short-term residential program. There are also specialized groups for clients struggling with co-occurring disorders.

The sole alum surveyed by Rehabs.com to date indicated that they received individual counseling and attended 42 group therapy sessions each week. Though the Memphis VA does not state its precise treatment methods, the center's website notes that the department pursues research and training to ensure that all treatment is state-of-the-art.

In addition to substance use disorder, the Memphis VA Medical Center offers treatment for a variety of mental health problems including depression and anxiety, PTSD, anger management, memory problems, self-harming behaviors, and vocational issues. And outside of formal treatment, the center has outreach services for homeless veterans, which include support with addiction and mental health disorders.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The Memphis VA employs numerous psychologists, but the facility doesn't currently provide any more specific information about its addiction treatment staff. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com on the staff's level of experience and training gave it three out of five stars. In addition, the single alum polled on the level of staff support provided and the level of training found in one-on-one counselors gave the center five stars in both categories.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, however, both individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center's exercise and leisure offerings gave them five stars. The same two reviewers gave the center a four-star rating and a five-star rating for its cleanliness.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Both alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date gave very positive feedback. "I was treated like a real person. The Dr.,nurses and counclers were top gread an really cared," wrote James, giving the center five stars for the overall quality of its individual and group counseling and four stars for its holistic offerings. "Very effective," was the appraisal of the other reviewer, writing anonymously.

Secondary sites don't currently offer any reviews of the mental health department in particular, but they do hold numerous reviews of the Memphis VA as a whole, and they're mixed, skewing negative. The center has average ratings of 2.9 out of five stars based on 137 reviews on Google, 3.4 stars based on 608 opinions on Facebook (where the facility can manage its own page), and 1.5 stars based on 10 reviews on Yelp, plus eight "not recommended" reviews on Yelp, most of them for one star. And on YellowPages.com, the center has a one-star rating and a four-star rating.[1] [2] [3] [4]

The negative reviews invariably cite disorganization and long wait times, or more occasionally, problems with staff. But numerous reviewers weighed-in to say they had received nothing but exemplary service at the center. "They have staff there that actually like their job and want to help veterans but that is drowned out a lot of times by all the other staff that just shows up for a check," wrote Heather, who attended the center for help with a substance use disorder.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

"I loved the whole feel but something was off," wrote the single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date. They gave the facility five stars for the effectiveness of its treatment but remained neutral on the question of whether they would recommend the program. Otherwise, they awarded the center four stars for its holistic offerings, three stars for its family participation and counseling options, and two stars for its ability to treat co-occurring disorders.

FINANCING

As a VA facility, the center is among the 45.6 percent of facilities in Tennessee that accept federal military insurance. A co-pay may be required. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center's affordability gave it three out of five stars.

CONCLUSION

Commercial Appeal, part of the USA Today network, reported in October 2018 that the Memphis VA was among the lowest-rated VA medical centers in the country, having received the network's lowest rating of one-star, three years in a row, owing to "uncommonly high levels of patient death and medical complications." And in June 2018, a local Fox network reported 16 avoidable deaths at the facility.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/MemphisVAMC/reviews/?ref=page_internal
[3] https://www.yelp.com/biz/va-memphis-memphis?osq=Memphis+VA+Medical+Center
[4] https://www.yellowpages.com/memphis-tn/mip/memphis-va-medical-center-u-s-department-of-veterans-affairs-479128241?lid=479128241
