Surrounded by scenic woods and set right next to the Tennessee River, the expansive facility offers <strong>four acute psychiatric care units and two long-term care units</strong> for individuals struggling with a primary psychiatric disorder, as well as co-occurring substance use disorders.</p> <p><strong>TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT</strong></p> <p>According to the center’s website, clients may be admitted to Moccasin Bend for inpatient care on <strong>both a voluntary or involuntary basis</strong>. Some may also be referred by the court system for pre-trial evaluations. Upon admission to the facility, clients may participate in an <strong>initial psychiatric assessment</strong> to determine an appropriate care unit.</p> <p>The mission of the hospital is to provide respectful, compassionate, and comprehensive care to adults with <strong>severe and persistent mental illness.</strong> The main goal of treatment is to promote successful recovery so that clients can successfully return home and reintegrate into the community.</p> <p>Treatment programming includes <strong>psychological, pastoral, pharmaceutical, and medical clinic services</strong>, as well as dietician services and forensic evaluations. During inpatient treatment, patients may participate in <strong>counseling sessions, educational classes, and recreational therapy</strong>. Patients struggling with co-occurring substance use disorders may also attend specialized counseling sessions and <strong>education classes focused on chemical dependency</strong>. </p> <p><strong>STAFF CREDENTIALS</strong></p> <p><strong>Each of the six units has their own unique treatment teams</strong>, which consist of a nursing staff, a psychiatrist, and a nurse practitioner, along with a social worker, an activity therapist, and a treatment team coordinator, according to the center’s website.</p> <p><strong>ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES</strong></p> <p>The facility’s website states that Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute is a straightforward, no-frills psychiatric hospital offering a total of 150 adult psychiatric beds through its six separate units. It is also a <strong>tobacco-free</strong> campus, though offers <strong>barber/beautician services</strong> on-site.</p> <p><strong>WHAT ALUMNI SAY</strong></p> <p>The two alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided positive feedback for Moccasin Bend. They both gave the center five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness and it’s treatment for <a href="http://www.recovery.org/topics/dual-diagnosis-recovery/" target="_blank">co-occurring disorders.</a>. They also gave Moccasin Bend four and five-star ratings for the facility's counseling options and the staff's level of training and experience. "Staff and programming was good," one anonymous alum wrote. </p> <p>While one alum gave the center top marks in every category, the other alum gave two stars for the facility's holistic offerings, discharge planning, and for the facility's cleanliness. However, the alum did attribute his sobriety to the facility. </p> <p>On secondary sites, ratings for Moccasin Bend were more moderate. On Google reviews, six individuals gave the facility an average rating of 3.3 out of five stars. "Great place for what it does," alum Shelley wrote, who also awarded the facility a four-star rating. <small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-1"><sup>[1]</sup></a></small> On Moccasin Bend's Facebook page, which the facility can manage, 51 reviewers gave the facility an average rating of <strong>3.3 out of five stars.</strong> While many alumni appreciated the effectiveness of the facility, and 21 gave it perfect five star ratings, others had more serious complaints, including Jennie who felt the staff was negligent and uncaring. <small class="footnote"><a target="_blank" href="#footnote-2"><sup>[2]</sup></a></small></p> <p><strong>WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY</strong></p> <p>The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the hospital a negative review. Across 15 different evaluated areas of treatment, they awarded the hospital almost entirely one and two out of five stars, including the facility's discharge planing, communication with their loved one, and for the facility's cleanliness. They cited "contact with family instruction on what to do when they leave and go home" as a facility weakness and described the facility as "old and nasty." </p> <p>However, on the facility's Facebook page, loved ones offered some very positive opinions of the facility. Carlotta, a mother of a client, wrote: "He received the most exemplary care from the most dedicated people you can imagine."</p> <p><strong>FINANCING</strong></p> <p>According to <a href="http://mental-health-facilities.healthgrove.com/l/4046/Moccasin-Bend-Mental-Health-Institute" target="_blank">HealthGrove</a>, the hospital accepts self-pay, private insurance, <strong>Medicare, and Medicaid</strong>.
