ABOUT G. WERBER BRYAN PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL

G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital is operated by the state of South Carolina. It provides inpatient psychiatric treatment for adults, and primarily takes involuntary admissions. On the same campus is the William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute, which provides inpatient psychiatric treatment for children and adolescents, making it one of the only 49 (43 percent) centers in the state with specifically-tailored programming for this age group.

Additionally, there is a unit for male adolescents who have received a dual diagnosis of substance use and additional mental health disorders. Outpatient services are limited to assessments and referrals. The state also operates an adult rehab center nearby, called Morris Village.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The Hall Psychiatric Institute and Bryan Hospital focus on stabilization. Psychiatric evaluation services are provided, along with short-term inpatient medication management and individual and group therapy for acute and chronic serious mental illness. The Bryan website does not designate whether detoxification services are available.

Hall operates a dedicated residential program for males aged 13 to 21 struggling with co-occurring addiction and mental health challenges. While in treatment, adolescents participate in motivational-oriented therapy through individual and group sessions, psychopharmacology, education, and activity therapy. Many of the clients in this program are involved in the juvenile justice system. Hall also operates an on-site school.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Bryan Hospital and the Hall Institute employ psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses, and social workers. In South Carolina, 98.2 percent of all substance abuse treatment centers have continuing education requirements for staff.

The Institute functions as a teaching hospital in partnership with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. As of this writing, the sole individual polled by Rehabs.com on staff level of support provided a four-star rating, and the sole individual polled on the staff's level of experience and training also gave four out of five stars.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its inpatient living arrangements and related offerings. The two individuals who have provided survey responses to Rehabs.com at the time of this writing indicated moderate satisfaction with accommodations. Their respective ratings included three and four stars out of five for the facility's cleanliness and upkeep, two and three stars for meals and nutrition, and three stars from each for exercise and leisure activities.

The hospital campus is located in a wooded area north of Interstate 20 and the Manning Correctional Institute, according to Google map images. Prior to its move to Bryan Hospital grounds, the adolescent psychiatric institute was located at the site of South Carolina State Hospital.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The single alum polled by Rehabs.com to date tended to give generally positive feedback for most aspects of treatment. Awarding four out of five stars for the effectiveness of treatment overall and the ability of the facility to address co-occurring disorders, this former client agreed that they would recommend the program to others. The anonymous reviewer highlighted the staff and therapy groups as particular areas of strength.

Both alumni also offered three-star ratings for the facility's counseling options, amount of holistic therapies, and opportunities for family participation. Additionally, when surveyed on facility weaknesses, the individual replied, "Small rooms. Food wasn't that great."

Elsewhere, reviews by former clients revealed a split between opinions of the adolescent facility and the adult hospital. Three Google reviewers gave perfect five-star ratings to William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute, and one gave three stars, for an average rating of 4.5.[1] One of these individuals complimented the staff and therapy for being caring and effective. Notably, this individual agreed with the Rehabs.com reviewer in representing accommodations less favorably, but concluded that it was the best rehab experience they had attended.

By contrast, six Google reviewers of G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital produced a low average rating of 1.8 out of five stars. Two alumni, referencing mental health treatment without mentioning addiction, reported disrespectful staff and a disruptive environment.[2]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The sole family member polled by Rehabs.com to date gave mixed feedback. Although this loved one, T.N., awarded the center five stars for its level of family involvement and four stars for its staff support and leadership, they noted that their loved one was back in treatment at the center having relapsed after their first stay, and as such, gave the facility just three stars for its overall effectiveness. โ€œSeems to be caring staff," the reviewer wrote, in agreement with alumni of the Hall Psychiatric facility.

A single loved one was among the three individuals rating Bryan one star on Google reviews.[2] They concurred with alumni regarding poor staff interaction, also reporting an over-reliance on medication, insufficient therapy, and billing problems. The other loved one on Google provided Bryan with three stars, but noted the "stark" facilities, and commented on an inattentive staff.

WHAT STAFF SAY

While Rehabs.com has not yet received staff feedback as of this writing, reviews on employee review sites were mostly favorable. Ten individuals contributed to an average rating of 4.3 stars out of five on Indeed for Bryan Hospital.[3] One former employee mentioned disorganization. All other reviewers reported positive working relationships with coworkers and an environment conducive to learning. One highlighted the quality of recreational, educational, and therapy groups.

A stable work environment and positive coworkers were also noted as strengths on Glassdoor, where six former or current employees gave the facility an average rating of 3.5 stars out of five.[4] One reviewer supported a parent's critique of too little access to therapy, particularly in groups. A negative outlier characterized some staff as uncaring.

FINANCING

G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital accepts many uninsured clients. The two individuals polled on the hospital's affordability and pricing awarded three and four out of five stars, and one of these respondents indicated that their loved one financed their treatment using Medicaid.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] GoogleReviews
[3] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Bryan-Psychiatric-Hospital/reviews
[4] https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/G-Werber-Bryan-Psychiatric-Hospital-Reviews-E122212.htm
