Editorial Review

ABOUT THE CONSORTIUM INC.

Founded in 1967, the Consortium is a nonprofit community mental health center, defined by the Consortium itself as "organizations that provide mental health services to the community and take responsibility to arrange all medical services needed by its patient population." The Consortium is one of 12 such organizations working in Philadelphia, and its efforts are particularly focused on west and southwest Philadelphia.

Alongside treatment for mental health disorders and developmental disabilities, the Consortium provides a variety of outpatient programs for individuals struggling with problematic substance use.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The Consortium provides outpatient medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for individuals aged 18+ who are struggling with opiate addiction. In particular, the program uses methadone, complemented by programming that aims to help clients to make healthier choices. In order to qualify, clients must have been dependent on opiates for at least a year, and must be in active addiction.

In addition, the Consortium offers a Family Preservation Program: treatment at standard outpatient and intensive outpatient (IOP) intensities for women aged 18+, both with and without children. The program includes individual and group counseling and case management, as well as childcare, transportation, and support for children, where necessary.

There are also various programs for teens: one that focuses primarily on prevention; a more intensive track, still offered after school, that offers counseling, treatment, case management, and recreational activities; and an IOP and general outpatient care offered as an alternative to incarceration or other justice treatment, for adolescents involved in non-violent drug and substance offenses.

Finally, the Consortium provides general outpatient counseling and education and counseling about HIV and Hepatitis at a variety of locations throughout the city.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The team includes at least one doctor, who serves as the chief medical officer. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date, themselves a staffer, gave The Consortium one out of five stars for the experience levels of its medical, mental health, and addictions staff.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews directly from alumni of The Consortium, but secondary sites yielded one review: a five-star rating left on Google.[1] "Great place," wrote reviewer C.C.

WHAT STAFF SAY

The single staff member polled by Rehabs.com to date would not recommend treatment at The Consortium. "Don't treat co-occuring," Mary wrote, giving the facility one out of five stars for its honesty and willingness to put clients' interests first as well as the overall quality of its care.

Secondary sites yielded mixed feedback from staff at the time of this writing: a 3.32-star average rating based on 19 reviews left on Indeed.com.[2] Several reviewers cited problems with management; more pertinently to prospective clients, a handful of reviewers cited heavy workloads, which could negatively affect client care. "Fast paced not enough staff," one former employee wrote. However, other reviewers repeatedly praised the facility's laid-back atmosphere and expressed genuine care and commitment to clients. "Very nice atmosphere with lots of very professional staff who liked working together to insure that the needs of the patients were being met. Very upbeat and fast paced environment," one former employee wrote in a representative review.

FINANCING

According to the Consortium's website, services are provided "regardless of income." The center accepts health insurance and offers a sliding fee scale. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date gave The Consortium one out of five stars for the fairness of its price point.

[1] https://goo.gl/kKDvLU
[2] https://www.indeed.com/cmp/The-Consortium/reviews?fcountry=US&floc=Philadelphia%2C+PA
