ABOUT JEFFERSON UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS: NARCOTIC ADDICTION REHAB PROGRAM (NARP)

Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals' Narcotic Addiction Rehab Program (NARP) in Philadelphia provides outpatient medication-assisted treatment, and in particular, methadone maintenance and ambulatory detox services.

Clients of the group's Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior also can receive intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment for non-opiate dependency and co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders at the same location.

Jefferson University Hospitals have offered addiction services since 1972. Within the state, they are among 5.2 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities with outpatient detoxification services and among 31.7 percent that provide outpatient methadone maintenance.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Admission to Jefferson University Hospitals' methadone clinic requires an application and long-term, current opiate use verified by urine testing. Once accepted, clients usually can begin treatment within two days, according to the facility's website. Clients also undergo medical and psychiatric evaluations, used to prepare individualized, holistic treatment plans that address addiction as a disease. Facility staff provide referrals and help to coordinate care with outside medical professionals, as well as medication management services for those in dual diagnosis treatment.

All NARP clients participate in educational sessions and individual and group therapy. A 2016 federal government list of rehab facilities indicated that trauma-informed, cognitive behavioral therapy is utilized in the clinic and that smoking cessation support is offered as well.

As such, the center is among 41.8 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities that offer smoking/tobacco cessation counseling in the state. Clients can attend Narcotics and Methadone Anonymous 12-step meetings on-site but are encouraged also to participate in the substance abuse recovery community outside the clinic.

The organization’s IOP runs for 12 to 16 weeks; clients attend three times per week for a total of nine hours per week. Additional services offered at the facility include HIV/AIDS testing and counseling, couples counseling, and community education.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Jefferson University is a teaching hospital and behavioral health treatment team members include board certified psychiatrists and interns, as well as licensed therapists. One psychologist on staff has published research on methadone maintenance treatment.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The NARP methadone clinic, located at 21st Street and Washington Avenue, is accessible on the main hospital campus via public transportation, including regional train, bus, and trolley lines. Several paid parking options are available on-site and off.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The one alum polled by Rehabs.com about NARP to date submitted moderately positive opinions. A.S. awarded positive ratings to a number of evaluated metrics: perfect five stars for family participation and treatment of co-occurring disorders; four stars for counseling options, holistic offerings, and staff experience and training; and three stars for affordability.

However, they assigned negative ratings to several others: two stars for 12-step activities; and one star for facility cleanliness and upkeep. A.S. represented therapy groups as a strength of the facility and its lack of cleanliness as a weakness. “The program works, but you have to be dedicated to getting off Drugs,” the alum wrote.

On secondary sites, the facility received moderately favorable coverage to date: three out of five stars based on 14 reviews on Google; a one-star and five-star rating on YellowPages.com; and 4.5 out of five stars based on 141 reviews on Facebook, which the organization can manage. [1] [2] [3] Note that reviews on Facebook pertained to the hospital’s services as a whole rather than to NARP treatment.

Positive reviewers praised the staff at the clinic, characterized as “very friendly,” “conscientious and polite,” “awesome,” and “great human beings.” They also commended the ease of getting into the program and of receiving dosing, as expressed by alum R.M. on Google, who wrote: “It’s what you make of it! I work…so I am in and out.” Negative comments concerned the lack of commitment of many clients, lack of organization and privacy, and rude treatment, which prompted an alum on YellowPages.com to write: “FIND ANOTHER CLINIC!!!!”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Among the reviewers who rated the facility on Google to date, a loved one awarded the clinic four out of five stars. [4] J.A. wrote: "The people who work at this clinic try to do a good job.
