ABOUT BROOKE GLEN BEHAVIORAL HOSPITAL

Located on 11 acres in Fort Washington, a small suburb of Philadelphia, Brooke Glen is a psychiatric and behavioral health hospital for teens and adults. Brooke Glen is owned by the major psychiatric health network United Health Services (UHS).

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The hospital is geared towards treating psychiatric disorders, as opposed to substance abuse. The center does, however, accept those with dual diagnoses, referring them further for addiction treatment following psychiatric stabilization.

Treatment begins with an assessment conducted by a master’s level clinician, which is used to determine an appropriate course of treatment. Adolescents aged 13–18 are treated on a separate track to adults, making the center part of the 22 percent of Pennsylvania treatment facilities to provide specialized treatment for adolescents.

Brooke Glen offers trauma-informed care, aiming to treat the person rather than the illness. To addressing a range of mental health issue, including depression and anxiety, impulse control, situational crises, and obsessive- compulsive disorders, the hospital provides crisis stabilization, relapse prevention, medication review and management, amongst other treatment modalities. Length of treatment varies according to each client’s needs and circumstances.

Discharge planning begins on the day of admission. The process typically consists of follow-up appointments (including appointments to refill or alter prescriptions) as well as a crisis plan and support group information.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team includes physicians, doctoral-level clinicians, clinical staff, and psychologists. An on-site school led by certified teachers coordinates with teens school’s to help keep them on track with their classwork and homework.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

For safety reasons, clients may not have any clothing items with drawstrings, belts, or laces. The four individuals surveyed by Rehabs.com to date gave the center mediocre ratings for its cleanliness and exercise and leisure options.

Cleanliness: 3.25/5 stars
Exercise/leisure activities: 3/5 stars

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Feedback provided by three program alumni was mixed. In their Rehabs.com surveys, the three disagreed over the effectiveness of treatment, giving it two, three, and five stars, and the holistic offerings, which they gave one, three, and four stars. In addition, the two alumni surveyed on counseling options and co-occurring treatment gave one- and two-star ratings in these categories. One described the staff as organized and helpful but another found them “very rude. “The food was awful, the facilities were not well cleaned,” one commented.

As of this writing, secondary review sites also yielded mixed feedback. On Google, the facility earned an average rating of 2.6 out of five stars based on 88 reviews, and on Yelp, it has one one-star review and one five-star review, plus three one-star reviews and two five-star reviews that are not currently recommended.[1][2] Reviewers both praised staff, in particular one doctor, and criticized them, often describing them as rude or inattentive. “It was terrible! Beds were awful, people were rude,” K.M. wrote in a representative statement on Google. But in another representative review, J.H. wrote: "Turning my life around isn't easy but this place have me the support and strength I needed. The staff of unit B2 is the best.”

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date indicated that they’d strongly recommend treatment here, give three stars for its holistic offerings and its admin/discharge practices, and four or five stars in metrics measuring treatment effectiveness, family participation, counseling options, amongst others. “Best when trying to change someones bad habits,” the anonymous loved one wrote.

FINANCING

According to the facility's website, Medicaid is accepted. The center is one of 350 (69.7 percent) of Pennsylvania treatment centers to accept most private insurance plans. The four individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave low marks for the center's affordability.

Affordability: 2.75/5 stars

CONCLUSION

In February 2017, PennRecord noted that Brooke Glen had been singled out by enforcers of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, “claiming the company exposes employees to violent attacks from patients.” The article also noted that such public statements are “somewhat ‘alarmist’ and don’t wholly reflect companies’ or facilities’ commitment to safety and the measures they have taken to protect their workers.”

Brooke Glen’s owner, UHS, is currently under federal investigation for alleged Medicaid fraud, and was the subject of a major Buzzfeed investigation in 2016. “A yearlong BuzzFeed News investigation…” the piece reads, “raises grave questions about the extent to which [the company’s] profits were achieved at the expense of patients.” “The company has said it strongly disputes the allegations of civil or criminal fraud and is cooperating with the investigation. It has not been charged with any wrongdoing,” the piece adds.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.yelp.com/biz/brooke-glen-behavioral-hospital-fort-washington
[3]https://www.yelp.com/notrecommendedreviews/brooke-glen-behavioral-hospital-fort-washington
