Editorial Review

ABOUT TREATMENT TRENDS, INC. - KEENAN HOUSE

Since 1969, Treatment Trends, Inc., (TTI) a nonprofit social services agency headquartered in Allentown, Pa., has offered services for individuals struggling with substance use and co-occurring disorders.

The agency’s Keenan House provides residential treatment for adult men and women, with specialized programming for individuals involved in the criminal justice system, placing it within about one-third of the state’s 502 facilities to offer this specialized service. All TTI facilities also include a Veterans Treatment Track, programing that is available in just 91 (18.1 percent) of Pennsylvania’s facilities. In addition, TTI operates Halfway Home of the Lehigh Valley in Allentown.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

To begin admission to Treatment Trends' Keenan House, individuals must participate in an assessment by their referring agency, typically an official county organization. Detox services are not provided on-site. Keenan is one of the 22.7 percent of Pennsylvania facilities to provide long-term residential care, or longer than 30 days.

The facility operates as a Therapeutic Community, oriented toward whole person recovery. In addition to a mix of evidence-based therapeutic modalities - including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and Gestalt therapy - clients have access to medical and, if necessary, psychiatric monitoring twice a week. While a dual diagnosis track is provided, Keenan House is not able to accommodate clients with uncontrolled psychiatric conditions.

Frequent psychoeducation and group therapy sessions address such topics as addiction awareness, grief and trauma, decision-making, life skills, sexuality and addiction, nutrition, and parenting. Most residents attend a three-week vocational education class and obtain employment while enrolled at Keenan.

TTI’s veterans track prioritizes identifying and treating PTSD. Programming also incorporates Seeking Safety, and an expressive arts group. Families may participate in a once-a-week support group. All program graduates receive a comprehensive aftercare plan, according to the facility’s website.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Treatment Trends, Inc., in Allentown, employs board-certified psychiatrists and addiction medicine doctors. Veterans are encouraged to apply for treatment staff, including certified addiction counselors and other positions.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Keenan House can accommodate up to 95 clients at a time. Residents perform chores on-site and participate in community service with a local nonprofit. The facility hosts a Sunday Brunch open to the public once a month. Regular residents’ meals are provided in a cafeteria with fresh salad bars, according to a handbook published on the Pennsylvania state website.

Visitation is pre-approved by counselors and available to residents every other weekend. Phone calls are allowed once per week.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s alumni, and feedback submitted to other sites was mixed at the time of this writing. On Google, Keenan House received a rating of 1.9 out of five stars, based on feedback from 14 individuals. About half the written comments referred to a majority of counselors as unprofessional. Others indicated that programming was not helpful in recovery, with one describing it as “adult daycare.”

By contrast, on the Keenan House alumni association Facebook page, just four of 24 ratings for the facility were for fewer than four or five out of five stars. Several alumni agreed that the program’s success required commitment, while praising counselors for their investment in clients’ recovery.[2]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The one loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date indicated that they would recommend the program to others, but did not feel included in their husband’s treatment. The reviewer awarded four or five out of five stars for all but two of 15 metrics measuring various aspects at Keenan House, including treatment for co-occurring disorders, the facility’s cleanliness and upkeep, the staff’s level of training and experience, and affordability. Family participation and holistic offerings received three stars apiece.

The three loved ones reviewing Keenan on Google tended to agree with criticism of overly restrictive communication and visits. On Facebook, both reviews submitted by loved ones were positive, citing “good people” and effective treatment “if you take it serious.”

FINANCING

According to the Treatment Trends, Inc., website, Keenan House clients are typically funded by their county’s drug and alcohol agency or the criminal justice system. Income from client jobs held during treatment is applied to court, medical, and incidental living costs.

[1] GoogleReviews
[2] https://www.facebook.com/pg/Keenan-House-Alumni-Association-165799270223299/reviews/
