Editorial Review

ABOUT SERENITY LANE

Established in 1973, Serenity Lane is a private, nonprofit drug and alcohol treatment center with an office in Washington State and numerous locations throughout Oregon. The Roseburg facility, located in southern Oregon, offers a multi-phased intensive outpatient program (IOP), which is used by about 64 percent of Oregon treatment facilities. For those who require more intensive treatment, medically monitored detox and residential care are available at Serenity Lane's hospital and inpatient facility, which is located in Coburg, Ore.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, all clients participate in an initial intake interview with a counselor to discuss their personal history and determine the most appropriate level of care. Those who are referred to the center’s IOP program begin their treatment with a two-hour orientation.

The IOP program is divided into two phases, the first of which lasts 10 weeks and involves one-on-one counseling, intensive group therapy, addiction education, and regular drug testing. Treatment groups meet for three hours, three times a week, and both daytime and evening sessions are available. Clients have the option to participate in coed or gender-specific groups.

The second phase of treatment, called Recovery Support, lasts for 44 weeks and consists of weekly, 90-minute group sessions that focus on relapse prevention and recovery skills. Family members of clients are encouraged to be involved in their loved one’s treatment through specialized family groups and on-site Al-anon meetings.

The center also provides a variety of recovery support groups, and 12-step meetings, which are offered by about 78 percent of Oregon facilities. The center offers DUI services, which makes it part of the nearly 55 percent of Oregon treatment facilities that treat clients with DUIs.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to Serenity Lane’s website, outpatient treatment is managed by a staff of mental health professionals and counselors.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The four alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided mostly positive reviews. Three of the four respondents gave the center’s treatment effectiveness four out of five stars, and two individuals specifically highlighted the staff’s helpfulness. “I personally was hitting my bottom and when I entered Serenity Lane, they took me under their wings and guided me through the recovery processes,” Tina told Rehabs.com. Another anonymous reviewer felt that the facility seemed focused on money, but that the counselors “care about each individual and their success in recovery.”

In the only negative review, one anonymous alum rated the program’s treatment effectiveness with only two out of five stars, telling Rehabs.com that the treatment environment only reminded them of drug and alcohol use. They were also discouraged by the attitudes of the other clients. “Most the people in treatments are by law forced. Not willingly want help,” they wrote.

FINANCING

According to its website, Serenity Lane works with most major insurance companies, including Aetna, Cigna, and United Health. Discounts, scholarships, and payment plans are also available to clients who qualify.
