<p><strong>ABOUT VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA OREGON: MEN'S RESIDENTIAL CENTER</strong></p> <p>Founded in 1896, Volunteers of America is a <strong>faith-based organization</strong> that provides housing, treatment services, and other support for low-income individuals, veterans, the elderly, the homeless, the formerly incarcerated, individuals struggling with addiction, and other vulnerable populations.</p> <p>Alongside a variety of Portland-based services including a <a href="https://www.rehabs.com/listings/volunteers-of-america-of-oregon-day-treatment-program-1288472667/" target="_blank">day treatment center</a>, Volunteers of America Oregon is a <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/OR17.pdf" target="_blank">private nonprofit, which make up about 55 percent of all Oregon facilities</a>; it is one of the 39 (17.3 percent) of Oregon centers that offers <strong>residential treatment.</strong> Services are available for for use specifically by <strong>men referred via the criminal justice system.</strong> All men must be referred voluntarily. </p> <p><strong>TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT</strong></p> <p>According to Volunteers of America Oregon's website, <br /> <strong>the program is a year long,</strong> the first six months of which are spent living at the facility; the next six months are spent in a <a href="http://www.recovery.org/topics/extended-recovery-programs/" target="_blank">continuing care program</a>. </p> <p>During the residential program, <strong>treatment revolves around the <a href="https://www.recovery.org/pro/articles/how-a-non-religious-journalist-makes-a-case-for-aa-in-2017/" target="_blank">12-Steps</a></strong> as well as group and individual counseling. Counselors work closely with residents, acting as role models for them, and counseling works to get to the root causes of addiction and criminal behavior, to recognize and prevent relapse, and to <strong><a href="https://www.recovery.org/pro/articles/how-understanding-anger-revolutionizes-addiction-recovery/" target="_blank">manage anger</a> and stress.</strong> The goal is for clients to leave treatment with sufficient self-knowledge and communication and living skills to live productive lives in society.</p> <p>Alumni programming includes a large annual get-together as well as a <strong>mentoring program</strong> that sees numerous former clients returning to the facility to act as mentors to current residents. The latter six months of treatment also includes <strong>vocational training opportunities</strong>, which is offered by <a href="https://wwwdasis.samhsa.gov/webt/state_data/OR17.pdf" target="_blank">44.7 percent of treatment facilities</a> in Oregon, and further social activities. "There are not many treatment programs available to people who have no insurance or financial resources," an anonymous loved one wrote in the most revealing comment.
