Editorial Review

ABOUT HOOPER DETOXIFICATION STABILIZATION CENTER

The Hooper Detoxification Stabilization Center, located in Portland, Ore., is named after David P. Hooper, who was “the last person to die of alcoholism in the Portland City Jail.” The facility, which offers medically-monitored detox services to adult men and women, is part of the Central City Concern (CCC), one of Oregon’s 125 private, non-profit treatment agencies dedicated to providing comprehensive solutions to end homelessness and help people achieve self-sufficiency.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

The Hooper Detoxification Stabilization Center (HDSC) is one of only 26 detox facilities in the state and offers a short-term treatment process. Most clients remain at the facility for a period of four to 10 days. All receive a medical examination upon admission and round-the-clock treatment for early withdrawal symptoms. New patients arrive around 7:30 a.m. on weekdays to be triaged for treatment. Due to high demand for this program, typically not everyone will be admitted each day.

Once the detox process is completed, clients meet with a counselor and are referred to available services for rehabilitation, including the CCC’s own Recovery Center. Clients can also be admitted to the HDSC by referral from other facilities.

HDSC provides a number of care programs for clients with specialized care needs. It is one of 45 Oregon facilities to offer specialized treatment for pregnant women. There are specialized care programs for clients with opiate addiction, medical conditions, Benzodiazepine addiction, and Methadone addiction.

Clients that are looking for an alternative method of detox can participate in the outpatient detox program. Only 8.4 percent of the state’s facilities offer outpatient detox services. Clients must be able to travel on their own and medically stable to participate.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team includes physicians, registered nurses, licensed counselors, and addiction technicians. Many of the staff members are in recovery themselves having completed a treatment program and maintained their sobriety. Volunteers may also be on hand to help clients during treatment.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Housed in a basic, no-frills brick building in downtown Portland, Ore., the facility offers extremely straightforward accommodations. Clients stay in a large shared bedroom with at least 10 clients in it. Each client gets a small locker for personal belongings, and sleep in single-occupant beds. The facility also has large meeting spaces for group counseling and activities. There are also individual counseling spaces. The facility is surrounded by open wooded areas, which are great for outdoor activities.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

At the time of this writing, only one alum has provided feedback regarding Hooper Detox, and it was mostly positive. Dan, who acknowledged having been through detox seven times at Hooper, gave the facility five out of five stars for treatment effectiveness and holistic inclusion, and wrote to Rehabs.com that the center saved his life. Dan did give the facility’s accommodations and leisure options only one out of five stars.

On Yelp, one reviewer to date, S.V., gave Hooper five out of five stars and wrote: “Detoxing is no fun but this facility sure does make it much more comforting. The whole entire staff is incredible.”[1]

At the time of this writing, the facility also received 4.2 out of five stars from 23 reviews on Google.[2] Many of the alumni discussed the effectiveness of the program and the caring staff. Representative alum Matthew wrote: “Amazing staff who truly care about you. They not only offer a very comfortable detox but also help with setting up aftercare.”

A few reviewers did note poor quality food, such as an anonymous CiteHealth reviewer who gave just one out of five stars for their experience.[3] They wrote that sleeping conditions were uncomfortable and that "Government grade noodle soup the only sustenance."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The two anonymous loved ones surveyed by Rehabs.com to date offered contrasting opinions about Hooper Detox. One family member said that the center truly cares about its clients and noted that it’s “an affordable option and a popular treatment center in Portland.” But another anonymous reviewer felt that treatment was too expensive and reported that it “didn't help in any meaningful way.”

The loved one that was polled about its family participation, affordability, connectivity, and facility cleanliness gave three out of five stars. Four stars were given for counseling options. Only one star was given for its holistic offerings.

FINANCING

The facility accepts some private health insurance plans and offers sliding scale fees to those who qualify and use self-pay options. Those eligible will be enrolled in the Oregon Health Plan making HDSC one of 136 facilities that accept state-funded insurance.

CONCLUSION

HDSC is expanding its offerings to a wider network within the community. It can accept clients from multiple cities and areas around Portland, giving a greater level of care access to clients that need to begin their recovery process.

[1] https://www.yelp.com/biz/hooper-detoxification-center-portland
[2] GoogleReviews
[3] http://citehealth.com/reviews/11175
