Editorial Review

ABOUT CHOCTAW NATION HEALTH - CHI HULLO LI

Bordering the westernmost part of Ouachita National Forest in Oklahoma, Choctaw Nation Health provides behavioral health and addiction services for women. Through its Department of Behavioral Health, the organization runs two residential programs in Talihina as well as outpatient care at various satellite locations throughout Eastern Oklahoma.

Detox services are not offered here, though clients in Talihina have easy access to medical and dental services at the nearby Health Care Center.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Chi Hullo Li is a long-term, culturally-sensitive residential treatment program for Native American women, aged 18 or older. Programming is intended for women who are pregnant, postpartum (infant is 12 months or younger), or with children.

Per its website, Chi Hullo Li offers women a “diverse experience that encompasses cultural and spiritual identity, physical and emotional health, education and effective parenting.” While in treatment, mothers may be accompanied by two children through the age of 11 (unless one child is an infant, in which case the facility allows for a third child to be present).

The Recovery Center is a highly structured 28-day program designed to treat addiction. Outside the time spent in one-on-one, group, and family therapy sessions, women receive support to improve their problem solving, decision making, and general coping skills.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The Behavioral Health Outpatient Clinic is staffed by psychiatrists, nurses, and master’s level therapists.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, though the three individuals surveyed by Rehabs.com to date each gave three stars or more out of five for the center’s accommodations and quality of meals.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Finding favor in the “caring facility,” Dena, the single alum surveyed by Rehabs.com to date, felt that the remote treatment setting “prepares a person for going back into the 4eal world sober.” When asked, on a scale from one to five, how strongly she would recommend the facility, Dena gave the highest possible rating. “I didn’t want to leave when it came time to graduate,” the alum told Rehabs.com. Many other metrics received perfect five-star ratings, such as the facility's cleanliness, exercise and lesiure options, and the staff's level of training and experience. However, alum Dena did give the facility's connectivity a low two-star rating, indicating a lack of fairness in the facility's visitor policies. Dena qualified the rating, stating that the facility's "distance...it is far away from everything," was a drawback.

Feedback was similarly positive across secondary sites. On Citehealth, an alum was “Very grateful for the QUALITY & QUANITY of care from staff to meet all my needs during my recovery & appropriate individual after plan of care!”[1]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The pair of loved ones surveyed by Rehabs.com to date shared more mixed opinions of the facility. While the loved ones agreed on certain metrics, such as the facility's cleanliness, accommodations and amenities, and meals and nutrition, all of which received four out of five stars from both loved ones, they were sharply divided on the staff and the effectiveness of the provided treatment. One loved one, N.S., felt that the facility was "understaffed," and that much of the "staff was not adequately trained, nor suitable for the positions they held." N.S. proceeded to give low one-star ratings for the facility's treatment effectiveness, counseling options, and the staff's level of training and experience. The other anonymous loved one polled, conversely, felt the staff was "friendly," and awarded the metric a four-star rating.

Both loved ones, however, agreed with alum Dena in that the facility was “really far away.” Reviewer N.S. wrote: “The facility is located in a rural area, with limited access to AA/NA meetings, which patients are transported to and from weekly."

Additionally, both loved ones commented on the facility's admirable relation with the Choctaw Nation, and its availability to the tribal members. Loved ones gave high four and perfect five star ratings for the facility's affordability. "It is very affordable for tribal members," an anonymous loved one wrote, "They are friendly and helpful in so many ways." Even the loved one who was more negative regarding the staff and the treatment effectiveness wrote: "Facility is part of Choctaw Nation, and is convenient for Native Americans."

FINANCING

There is currently no information provided on the organization’s website regarding its treatment costs, yet the three Rehabs.com survey respondents each gave four or five stars for treatment affordability.

[1] http://citehealth.com/reviews/14281
